Wow, that was not at all what I expected. Patrick Stewart really gets to stretch his legs in this.

I watched the first episode yesterday. I overheard my mother loudly ask how a robot gets fat so I'm guessing she watched it this morning.

    My observations:
      Spoiler:
After spending so long in TNG getting rights for Data & the Exocomps they now seem to have decided to rescind those, a surprisingly fascist step for the Federation.
If they wanted to do a Blade Runner story why the hell didn't they try for that license instead of trying to shoehorn it into Trek?

As far as I remember the Federation was just fine with them having no rights, until Picard went all icard: at them, at which point they grudgingly gave them rights. Then had several episodes where they got chipped away for XYZ reasons, until Picard used his Main Character card again.

Given that, for example, the guy in charge of the Daystrom <meddle with robot sentience> division was the same Bruce Maddox who was the primary antagonist in the "does Data have rights" story in TNG, and apparently a bunch of them went rogue and blew up utopia planitia, it doesn't feel that much of a surprising step for me.

Picard the series just feels odd/off to me for some reason. Will have to see the second episode to make my mind up.
Guns make the news, science doesn't.

This... Lots of little 'off' things about it... the main one being

      Spoiler:
After the battle on the roof of one of the major Starfleet facilities he comes too on his sofa back in France, no follow up from Starfleet Security etc...

    That one got me too.

      Spoiler:
It almost felt like another dream sequence like the one in the beginning.

I’m genuinely surprised they didn’t deepfake Data’s face. The tech is trivial at this point, and there’s seven seasons worth of footage to train the system on.

    Speaking of transporters,
      Spoiler:
if the Romulan assassins tracking the girl could beam down dozens of assassins when they found her, why couldn't they just beam her into a holding cell instead? :nutrek:

Because (most of) the people making this show either didn't watch or don't care about Star Trek, they care about Known IP They Can Exploit To Make Money.

Would this be the same Midnight's Edge that proclaimed Discovery to actually be in the Kelvin timeline based on some seriously dubious speculation?
