It's almost the entire team that doesn't care about Star Trek, but really mostly it's Alex Kurtzman May His Name Always Be A Curse. He and Abrams were given the keys to the Trek franchise and they made two incredibly expensive, stupid movies that just ruined any chance at gaining a broader audience, so that by the time Beyond came out people were too burned out to care about Trek movies. When it flopped, the studio internalized the wrong lesson and said "hey we don't like losing money, we'd better give it back to the people who made at least some money." So Kurtzman was given TV Trek as well and I dunno, maybe he's been watching some old episodes and is starting to like it, sometimes I feel like we're watching the showrunners only now figuring out that Trek was already great and they didn't have to reboot/reinvent everything to make it relevant. But it's still v. clearly being produced mostly by people who would visibly much rather be making just about anything else.

Contrast this with The Mandalorian, which was conceived of and is being made by John "Happy" Favreau who very obviously loves Star Wars and wants his creation to fit into and build upon the existing universe. One of these approaches is sustainable. The other spits out shit like Disco and Picard.

Alex Kurtzman has damaged the Star Trek IP to such a degree that it will be impossible to repair the damage without somehow wiping away everything he has created since the 2009 reboot movies. That means erasing the "Kelvin timeline" and all of the silly nonsense which took place in it.

I think it was actually sub-par, he's usually p. reliable so I don't know if maybe the script was just impossible to make anything decent out of this time.

Despite Yourself was pretty good as I recall.

New Eden was pretty solid too. Project Daedalus was after the second season disappeared up its own arse trying to write the spore drive out of the universe, so not the best.

He's a decent director, but he doesn't write the stuff, so he's still dependent on the writers who don't honestly seem to have a great grasp of what it is they want to achieve with their arcs.

It looks pretty but it is pure wall-to-wall dumbness, the first example of trying to make Trek just another action franchise and arguably the one that started us down the road we're still on with Picard and Disco. It's not actually good.

First Contact wasn't all that great as a 'Star Trek' film... If you want to go one level futher Insurrection was probably the better 'TNG' film in terms of plot and scope...
