Reasonable episode. Was hoping that Lorca would be a bit more nuanced than a total villain (make the empire glorious again, lel).

Interesting where they ended up. This opens up all kind of possibilities for future episodes/seasons.

So getting back to their own universe but 9 months later could present some interesting storylines, especially with a mirror-Georgiou at the helm of Discovery maybe? Although I wouldn't be surprised if they went straight to travelling back in time to save the Federation.
      Spoiler:

I suspect the MU Georgiou to die on board of the Shengzu(?) instead of the real one. Which would fullfill her "final wish" to die in honor in a fight, which Micheal denied her by teleport-snatching her.

No, Lorca lost a different ship to the Klingons. You saw it briefly in the mirror episode where he talked about how he got to the prime universe.

Enjoyed the episode, although my trekkie friend hated it. I guess cause it's dark?

    Was bummed about

      Spoiler:
Lorca eating it. Although do know where his "Federation universe" self is? Seems like too good a character to just get rid of...

Maybe that or we haven't seen Federation Lorca at all, we only have assumptions that he died when MU Lorca came through and destroyed the Buran. Given what we know of MU Lorca Federation Lorca may actually have been harder to kill than that.

Sorry but that's the Buran. The Defiant is the one that came through to the Mirror Universe by accident.

It must be clear to you by now that there is no place in the future for straight white males.

I doubt we'll see Lorca again.

    Georgiou:
Genocides a whole planet, eats other sentient beings.
Harps on about how Michael is the only person she would grant a quick death.
Kills her senior council in the blink of an eye to protect a secret.
Attempts to throw Michael in the brig after revealing that she actually brought back mirror Lorca

    Lorca:
Has Mirror Stamets disintegrated rather than being dramatic about it.
Returns for his friends and crewmates when he could have carved out a good life in the prime universe.
Displays a genuine respect for Prime Discovery crew.
Offers Michael a place at his side.

    Which one is the baddie?

    I had a weird thought.....

What if the Federation is actually a totalitarian dystopian dictatorship that murders its citizens before replacing them with compliant copies???

We know from the lore that earth went through both a nuclear world war and a eugenics war. As Q showed dictatorships ruled over large parts of the ruined earth. Yet somehow progress continued, with warp drive leading to first contact, colonization of Terra Nova and eventually the Federation.

But what if it is all a lie?

The real technological breakthrough was the Transporter. Designed as a method of near-instantaneous transit between two unconnected locations, it real use was as a method of mass-murder and the creation of compliant copies.

Think about how the Transporter works. You stand on a pad and a beam of high energy particles disintegrates your body down to its constituent particles so that all the data is read and then transmitted to a different pad where particles are assembled to put you back together you. Except it doesn't. You die as you body is vapourised. In its place a copy of you is made, with everything copied right down to every neuron pathway, so even if it isn't you it may as well be you, right?

You can even be "beamed up" from anywhere to anywhere if a Transporter can get a lock on you.

Well, given that all your memories and personalities are being stored on a computer, and given how advanced Star Trek technology is in the field of neural medicine, what is to stop the computer stripping out unwanted thoughts and memories before creating a copy of a more compliant you.

All you need to do is make it legal for the copy to become you after your death.

So the Federation, rather than being the happy proto-socialistic xeno-friendly government is actually a brutal dictatorship that conquers worlds, and then executes its inhabitants by putting them through Transporters, creating reprogrammed copies who only remember what they are allowed to remember. Important personnel like starship crews go through the Transporter a lot, allowing for a constant cycle of execution and the purging of any memories that might lead to questions or rebellion in the copies.

So "beam me up" or "energize" might be the most terrifying final words anyone hears in the Star Trek universe.

I do like the view that the Fed is less than squeaky clean. In DS9 one of the maquis says to Sisko,
"I know you. I was like you once. But then I opened my eyes. Open your eyes, Captain. Why is the Federation so obsessed with the Maquis? We've never harmed you. And yet we're constantly arrested and charged with terrorism. Starships chase us through the Badlands, and our supporters are harassed and ridiculed. Why? Because we've left the Federation, and that's the one thing you can't accept. Nobody leaves Paradise, everyone should want to be in the Federation! Hell, you even want the Cardassians to join. You're only sending them replicators because one day, they can take their rightful place on the Federation Council. You know, in some ways, you're even worse than the Borg. At least they tell you about their plans for assimilation. You're more insidious, you assimilate people - and they don't even know it."

Quark says something similar too on a regular basis often remarking how humans are fine until they are hungry or scared.

This, it even showed the blue spore lines when he was being disintegrated and the fact that doctor dude showed up perfectly fine as a 'ghost' implies intelligence can be transferred as a whole into the network. I suspect he'll be back.
