Like any grindy game, it's fun for a while. The boats are pretty and shooting things with a fleet is enjoyable. Ultimately the game lacks sufficient content (player generated or otherwise) to give it any sort of longevity.

So the world of warships style arena combat for this is out in beta

It is called Naval Action Legends

It should just have popped up in your steam library if you own the original

Downloading it to give it a shot

Also interested in this. It was good fun when it was good fun, chasing people in a Renommee or Surprise.

I've not actually played it recently but a mate who used to run a clan on there has and he didn't have good things to say about it. The devs have responded in all the wrong ways to forum whining so port fights are essentially pre-planned set pieces with restricted attendance - i.e. little strategy involved and practically forgone conclusions. And server numbers are such that there's basically Russians and whatever everyone else can scrape together. The gameplay is still good, if you enjoy the long distance travel time, and the ships are pretty...and it finally has an interface.

Yeah the devs for this game are the absolute worst.

When I was playing they doubled down on the hardcore nature of the game, making even something as basic as travelling around a tedious grind. Crafting was nightmarish. Imagine eve with a significantly reduced population. They also fucked up what was a really fun damage model and made things really tanky.

Its such a shame too. The models are gorgeous and the combat was really cool.

Couldn't they just have made PvE and PvP servers?

    they did.

I played a bit post-wipe. The models and ship combat are still excellent, but god damn I cannot stand the community at all. Crafting isn't terrible imo, and I never minded the travel times personally. But the server pop is crazy low, the factions are laughably unbalanced in terms of PoP, and the oldest players are exactly the kind of screeching autists you would expect.

I think this is the problem with all game communities, the whiners will always scream the loudest and the devs will listen.
It is quite difficult not to be swayed by them. Easy to forget that the content/happy player/customer base usually are quiet.

Honestly if it had 5x the player base and there was enough level headed people to run a decent PvP clan I'd probably still be playing it. The base game is still good imo if you are OK with long downtimes where not a lot happens while sailing from A to B.
