I didn't see a thread for this yet. It's a sword fighting game, very similar to the saber fighting in JKA only with more depth and a lot more skill based. If you were any good at saber fighting in JKA, you can probably pick the game up pretty quick.

Here's a demonstration video that shows the basics. It's old, but pretty direct and to the point in terms of showing how the game works. The main changes to the game since then appear to be the addition of more sword types, characters, and polish:


You have some choice of ~4 different characters that determine what moves you have, similar to a typical 2D fighting game. You also get a choice of sword. Each sword has different bonuses and block styles, e.g. the foil (which I've been using a ton) does reduced damage with slashing attacks, but has a huge damage bonus the more stabby the hit was. Matching the right character with the right sword and playstyle has a huge impact on how well you can do (e.g. I pair it with a character that tends to do stabby lunge attacks and it owns everything). All characters have 3 different stances, and the stances have different numbers of maximum moves that can be chained together. Each attack increments the counter on all of the stances, e.g. if you attack in heavy stance then switch to medium, your next attack will be the second move in the medium chain. If you switch to light, then the 3rd attack will be the 3rd in the light chain. Switching back to heavy again will reset it to 0 because heavy most likely doesn't have an attack chain longer than 1.

As a side note, the game seems to be in pretty good condition in terms of polish. It's not crashing, runs smooth, has some nice jazzy/asian sounding fight music, and as long as pings are below ~100 the netcode appears to have a minimum of glitchyness.

Currently dirt cheap in a steam flash sale for $3. I picked it up yesterday for $7, and it seems to go on sale pretty regularly. I've only played it for about 4 hours so far, but it's one of the few games I've actually felt like recommending.

No, he spoke negatively about a game I was positive about, then spoke positively of a game that was said to be the same thing. I was hoping that he might take the opportunity to expand on his expressed viewpoint, rather than continue in his usual habit of posting cryptic one-sentence replies that don't add anything to the discussion.

details? looks super clunky, stiff, boring art style, and as much as sabre dueling was fun i don't see a whole game being set on it, especially not one that looks very much like those terrible korean f2p arena style games, sorry.

It's definitely not as clunky as it looks. Especially if you play the two classes based on chaining air moves and multihits. There was a nice developer video where the guy slowed down the critical parts of the fight and provided some good commentary as to what he was attempting to do and what his strategy was that shows it off a lot better than I can at my current skill level.

The art style objections may be valid, but I can't say anything about as it's never been high on my criteria for game evaluation. It annoys me because the characters tend to look pretty similar (I once died when I wasn't paying attention and didn't notice my fight was up. Thought I was spectating an AFKer), but it doesn't matter so much as far as actual gameplay.

I don't really understand the objection to a whole game set on saber dueling. If it was a $60 AAA title with "extensive singleplayer campaign", "deep and involving storyline", etc. then you 'd have something there. But it doesn't really claim to be anything other than $8 for improved JKA saber fights and people actually playing it. If you wanted something other than saber fights, then you're not the target demographic and it's a bit like complaining that mortal kombat is only about 2d characters fighting in the same arena over and over.
