Saw "Downsizing". The marketing was not accurate, at all, this is not a fun romp or comedy in any real way.

Wasn't a bad film, just a ham-fisted-messaging film. At least it's a decently good message.

    But don't go expecting fun.

Saw Blade Runnder 2049 yesterday and got to say this is one of if not the best movie of 2017 for me.

Finally a sequel that does it's very old original justice.

Agreed. Great atmosphere, visuals, pacing etc.

      Spoiler:
I liked how we never get any final confrontation/fight with Jared Leto's character. It is like, the fights and suffering is just for the little people, not the true elite. Usually Hollywood has to show the big bad get defeated the end, not so much other then not catching the daughter

Watched Bright yesterday evening ... liked it. Would like it even more if it would be a pilot ... ^^

Afterwards saw the reviews because i googled it ... lol ... sure, if one wants to be really critical it certainly has flaws ... but its funny how bad its reviews are.

P.S.: while it obviously is high production value ... but 90m ... huh ... was Will Smith thaat expensive ? :P
(which would be odd, considering his movies box office lately.... )

    $45 million budget "for talent":

Supposedly Will Smith got $20 million for Suicide Squad.

Netflix has so much money to burn that they probably think $90million for a Will Smith vehicle that people will watch even if nobody likes it is a steal. Same reason they paid so much for Adam Sandler.

It isn't really going to get 90 million more in Netflix subs though is it? I wonder what model they're going for here.

Being permanently in debt while paying stupid amounts to people involved in production.

Debts cheap, investors don't ask questions & the goal isn't necessarily to make "good" products, merely good enough - or attention grabbing enough - to either get a new subscription &/or convince an existing sub to let it roll over for another month (the bar for which seems pretty low). What criteria Netflix use to decide whether something was worth the investment is one of life's little mysteries.

And the movie/tv business has always been "try 20 different things, hope one succeeds and pays for everything and even leaves a good profit"

South Park had the gag that Netflix answered the phone with "Netflix, you're greenlit".

What it comes down to is content is king. Peoples' viewing habits have changed, with the tendency to watch whole series back-to-back rather than every week. This means that you need far more content than a traditional free to air TV channel.

So the first move was to buy up anyone with a sizable catalogue of movies and TV shows. But that cupboard has been stripped bare. There are still independent content producers but they simply don't create enough.

So the streaming services have to produce content to order, or pay through the nose for the small amount of independent content. And if it's your content you own it.

The next stage will be consolidation with the bigger streaming services buying up the smaller ones.

New Blade Runner was fucking amazing, one of best movies I have seen lately. Bright was very fun to watch, some hellboy vibes and some district 9 ones too with gangsta rap and heavy metal music. Was very cool to watch with beers. One of better action flicks I have seen lately.

And this is why the radio model is FAR better. Stations compete on how the curate the content not on who has the content

Is Bright not just a ripoff of https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Alien_Nation_(TV_series)?

Haven't watched it yet, but from the preview on Netflix, this is the first thing that came to mind.

It is similar to that indeed. The setting is an "hommage" to https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Shadowrun
