The best weight lifting site I've come across. He's a bit nazi with nutrition, but since he's 50 he needs to be. Still lots of good stuff and videos of exercises.

One very important thing is the focus on correct form for doing things. Better to use lower weight with correct form than using too much and getting injured. Most people new to weight lifting get too focused on the numbers and take shortcuts leading to injuries. Focus on the feeling and pump in your muscles instead, and lower the weight until you can use proper form. This can mean A LOT lower than you used to do, but will be safer gains. Can't workout if you fuck up your joints.

i read on alot of bodybuilding forums that scooby is an idiot who thinks he knows what he is talking about.

saying that he looks like he knows what he is doing =p and his advice SEEMS to be sound (in terms of form and whatnot)

Yeah I like that he explains his reasons. Makes it easier for me to judge it. I also prefer people who can type coherently.

I don't use his nutrition advice, but I have slim (toned) genes and grew up with good eating habits.

The main thing really is proper form to avoid injury. Shoulders and knees get fucked easily. Squats are dangerous.

Ugh, no-good shitty weakass lifting day today. Didn't feel strong at all; made my gains, but more through willpower than anything else, and spent ages faffing around. Also got sloppy with my squat grip again and now have sore elbow-crooks. Bleh.
Let's start a party of our own

Lifting without gloves might give you some callouses on your hands, not "fuck up" your palms. Nothing wrong with that. The thickness of gloves will add a couple mm to your grip, weakening it. So by using gloves, you might need straps.

I've decided not to use either, though my deadlift is only approaching 3 plates so I'm not exactly advanced yet :P
straps have their uses, but gloves never do. Not a single use I can think of.

This basically, he is a nice guy and he is definitely a better starting point than most, but dig a little deeper and you reach the limits of his knowledge pretty quick (skateboard squats, "scooby deadlift", 100lb floor press - fucking lol)

Shit happens, I'm down to an all-time low of 126 lbs so my lifts are suffering. Fucking sucks. Wish I was bulking again

scooby vids and site aren't just about bodybuilding tho. For exercise tips he's pretty great. The skateboard squats are about "what do when I've got no place/stuff/time", many of his vids are like that. Just options for those who don't have a gym to go to and no barbells/dumbells.

The one thing I don't agree with that he advocates are the tot style movement. It works and all that but it just doesn't feel right to be that slow. I guess his main point with it is to make sure you don't miss the work against gravity that you will miss if you don't lower in a controlled fashion... seen to many people do everything form pushups to leg curl where they just let the weight drop.

He's also pretty whiny about supplements in a way that'll get you loads of negrep on bb forums.

    tl;dr:
Scooby is cool. Good hints and tips.

You don't reach the limit of his knowledge. He's chosen to focus his site on beginners and people training at home, and to do that in a safe way. He excludes certain exercises simply because he thinks you should get a coach to teach you how to do them. This is p. basic to understand, but the retards that frequent bodybuilding forum fails to do so because they are, well, retards.

Innumeracy worked in my favor today - increased weight on the OHP, just about managed the first two sets and then failed on the last rep of the third. Was vaguely annoyed, but eh.

Then found I'd increased the weight by 5 kg rather than 2.5 \o/

I need to start getting back into fitness. I used to work out a regular 4 days a week, but its been two years of working a job with a strong drinking/drug culture, and 2 broken arms since.

Its going to be hard to afoord the gym membership now that ive quit my job, i think ill try find a cheap second hand bench and barbells. Then maybe find my own/build a squat rack. That should get most of the important lifts out of the way.

I do all my lifting on the floor. It works well enough. The only thing I lack is a pull up bar, have to go outside for that. I do the chest exercises with dumbbells, but I'm not lifting that heavy. Gets me doms so I'm happy enough. Going to the gym is too boring for me, I can't stand the time it takes.

Bent my first bar today - it turns out that shitty 1" standard bars don't like it when you squat 150 kg. Time to move up to the big boy gear.

In other news, I continue to lose weight at a rate of ~1 kg per week, I've reached the 'Intermediate' strength standards on all the big lifts for my actual bodyweight as specified by exrx and am well on my way to 'advanced' for my target weight. Also, the clash es numero uno lifting music. Ruuuuudiiiieeee can't fail!

Been thinking of writing about my fat self here for a while and now that my exercise is actually progressing I figured I might as well.

Ever since I was diagnosed with type 1 diabetes my weight has been all over the place. Last year my new nurse discovered that my old nurse was a cunt and my insulin doses were way off and just by lowering those I went from 92kg to 82 over the course of a few months. This spring I've been absolutely addled with extra work due to taking over some extra classes so I've gained that weight back and then some, going from 82 to 94kg with most of it around my belly. Around mid july I had a minor wtf-my-lifestyle crisis and stopped drinking, started eating smaller portions and going to the gym to run on a treadmill atleast 4 times a week. At first that intensive exercise made me gain a bit of weight because I didn't properly adjust my insulin levels from the extra effort. Now I have in roughly 3,5 weeks gone from being able to run 3km and almost passing out, to running 5k with some intervals thrown in there. Also down to about 90kg.

    Currently doing something like this:
    Monday: Intervals
    Tuesday: Long walk (>2h)
Wednesday: 2km treadmill warmup, some weight training
    Thursday: Long distance run
    Friday: Weights
    Saturday: Intervals
    Sunday: Rest.

Probably every fitness professional ever would tell me I'm going at a way too high pace for my level of fitness but it's the only way I can really keep at it.

Been averaging 30km/h on the stationary bike this week. I like to think that its a decent improvement over 25km/h a couple weeks back.

I want to congratulate you for wanting to change your life. Being dependent on injections for your insulin must be tough to factor into the routine. I see you stopped drinking, which is good, especially if you like to drink a lot of beer as it's very carb heavy. Do you consult with a dietician? I am not a professional, but there are a few comments I would like to make. You don't have to cut out all the drinks unless you are dead set on it. An occasional vodka, wine or whiskey shouldn't hurt you at all. If you are drinking any soda or store bought fruit juices, stop now. Fresh fruit is cheaper and better for you.

Your mortal enemies: pasta, pizza, bread, rice, cereal, desserts, baked goods. Eat these sparingly.

I like the variety you have going in your workouts, but yes, it does look like you might be overdoing it. It's hard to tell without knowing how many reps, set, and intervals you do. If you find that you are constantly sore and joints start hurting, you should probably back off it a bit. I am pretty much the laziest motherfucker you will ever meet, and I haven't really worked out in weeks aside from some walking and hiking. Last night, I got a wild hair up my ass and starting doing sprints around the city one block at a time. It felt really good.
