That's a lot of NVIDIA cock-sucking in that announcement... why can't that run on all modern cards?

The hearsay is that nvidia spends quite a bit of money to help developers with coding their engines so that it runs as well as possible; in such a fashion that it runs like shit on AMD hardware that focus more on parallelization than outright speed.

Because AMD doesn't currently offer a video card in any of those performance tiers. The RX 580 is GTX 1060 class; which is to say it offers performance similar to last-generation's high-end cards. Which is all fine and dandy, but those are the cards Valk's original graphics settings were designed against in the first place.

Anyhow, AFAIK there's nothing stopping you from enabling Ultra settings on an AMD card. It's just going to be slow on RX 580 cards. The new settings should do a lot better on RX Vega.

The announcement is basically word-bingo where you stick the word NVIDIA in front of a generic 3D rendering term. "NVIDIA lightning" "NVIDIA anti-aliasing" "NVIDIA shading". All of those things have existed for years or even decades. Sure, they've been slightly prettied up yet again, but doing that through a vendor-specific toolkit sounds extremely short-sighted. Especially when that vendor has a nasty reputation for doing this kind of thing over and over again for wholly anti-competitive and non-technical reasons. It's the hairworks debacle all over again. Letting yourself be used like that as a game company is just dumb IMHO.

Ultra mode starting at a 1070 is an extremely convenient coincidence btw, possibly precisely for the perceived reasons you mention.

You overestimate the amount of lock-in using those achieves.

If AMD comes out with similar rendering features they will be similar enough API that adding support for the other will be relatively easy.

They're not really features, you can do all those things with just DirectX. They're just lazy vendor-specific shortcuts that will never be 100% mirrored by another vendor, because they'll get a copyright infringement claim if they do.

For the record, I'm not even mad at NVIDIA, they're just being their usual scumbag self. I am somewhat mad at all game developers who get too far in bed with just one GPU vendor for no good reason, excluding a portion of their user base in the process.

You have no reason to continue it. Said wished-for changes were my personal opinion on what would make the game better for me, and that's that.

Even things like API's are difficult to copyright, as the unix vs. linux header thing in the early '00's showed.

The issue is more about mutually-assured-destruction piles of patents on on the underlying implementations.

IANAL no, but I was more talking about NVIDIA sticking NVIDIA in front of bloody NVIDIA anything so as soon as you try something similar or claim compatibility with that NVIDIA thing they'll go "hey now, that's our thing right there". Also they probably have more than enough budget to start "legally" harassing AMD big time so I'm assuming they'd rather just stay out of that one.

The thing about patents is that they are good for big guys to harass new small competitors out, but if two big companies decide to go at each others with patents and all that crap they both will just lose due to the huge costs of that litigation no matter what the end verdict is 10 years down the line.

I got a newsletter today saying that Valkyrie is dropping the VR requirement for PC and PS4.

I want to know how this is going to work.

    Hi Pilots,

Since its debut on Oculus Rift in March 2016, EVE: Valkyrie has launched on PlayStation®VR and HTC Vive®; introduced cross-platform play; and received five major updates and numerous patches.

It has been hailed as the “killer app” for VR and has built a vibrant community of dedicated pilots like you.

Now we are thrilled to announce Warzone, a major expansion to EVE: Valkyrie arrives September 26. Warzone is free to existing pilots, and it invites PC and PlayStation®4 gamers to the world of the Valkyrie without the need for a VR headset. Now all pilots can fly and fight together, on all supported platforms (PC, PlayStation®, PlayStation®VR, Oculus Rift, HTC Vive®), in fully balanced online first-person spaceship shooter combat.
    The Warzone expansion also brings:

    • NEW next-generation fleet of ships, each with unique weapons and Ultra abilities

    • NEW modular progression system, giving you more control over how you evolve your ships

    • NEW maps: ‘Fleet’, a Sisters of EVE space station, and ‘Outpost’, a mysterious Drifter base

    • NEW game mode: ‘Extraction’, which mixes combat and navigational challenges, forcing pilots to use the environment to their advantage

    • NEW reward system: Earn Reward Capsules to unlock a hangar full of personalization options

In addition to these huge new features, EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone also brings major changes to your pilot, hangar, and account. These changes are:
    GOLD

All our real-world currency transactions will now be delivered in Gold Reward Capsules, so any remaining gold in your accounts will be converted into Gold Reward Capsules which will be waiting in your vault when you first launch Warzone.

For every 200 Gold you have in your wallet, you will receive 1 Gold Reward Capsule, rounded up to the nearest multiple of 200. If you have 1 or more gold on your account, you will receive at least 1 Gold Reward Capsule as compensation.
    SILVER (VISK) AND IN-GAME ITEMS

With many wallet balances and in-game items in the six and seven-figure range, we felt it necessary to factor wallet balances and item costs down equally to make comprehending our Quartermaster and cosmetic upgrades easier! Rest assured, the silver in your wallet when you update will hold the same relative value as it previously did.
    IMPLANTS (XP BOOSTERS)

If you have any active Implant time remaining when Warzone launches, you will be refunded in Silver. Implants in Warzone only tick down based on your time in-battle, giving you greater control over how and when to use them for maximum XP benefits with no lost time.
    RETIRED COSMETIC ITEMS

With the arrival of our next-generation fleet, many of the Paint Jobs in pilot hangars are no longer applicable as the original fleet is being retired. We’re refunding all previous purchases to allow you to buy and apply the new exciting items in Warzone. All your favourite paint jobs will be included in Warzone, so you simply need to decide which of your new favourite ships is deserving of a stellar cosmetic makeover.
FOUNDER’S PACK ITEMS AND PILOT LINKING REWARDS

Items received as part of the Founders Pack are now converted to Legendary Paint Jobs – the highest rarity tier of Paint Job. You will still be able to apply these cosmetic upgrades to the new Wraith MK IV in your hangar. Similarly, Ember and Sapphire Paint Jobs will be granted in Warzone to eligible pilots and will be applicable to all new ships in Warzone. There’s never been a better time to link your pilot account.
    COSMETIC PILOT ITEMS

All previous Flight Suits and Helmets are compatible with Warzone and will remain in your hangar with no changes.
    CLASS BASED XP

XP in Warzone is now per ship – as opposed to per class – so pilot XP has been reset in Warzone. This is part of the greatly improved progression system in Warzone, which is directly linked to the experience gained using specific ships. It’s a new fleet, and a fresh start for all pilots. Once you dive into the unique mod-based progression of each ship, you’ll understand why it was important to embark on this journey from the beginning.
    SALVAGE

Crafting ship upgrades is now part of our improved progression system. This means Salvage is no longer a currency or used for crafting mods. Instead, Salvage is now the in-battle fuel that charges your new Ultra abilities. Collect it from destroyed ships during battles to speed up the charge rate of these awesome super weapons for your own ship, as well as those of your team mates.
    RANK

Our pilots have worked hard for their Rank, and we’re not about to reset those efforts! Your Rank will remain unchanged, and as a special bonus we will be giving Silver Reward Capsules based on how high you climbed. Silver Rank Reward Capsules will be waiting in your Vault when you first launch Warzone and you will receive 1 for each rank you achieved.
This means Rank 50 pilots will have 50 Silver Rank Reward Capsules waiting in their Vault at launch!
    LEADERBOARDS

Warzone is a fresh experience for everyone. New ships and abilities mean this legacy data is not comparable or compatible with the Warzone expansion content. We will be immortalizing the pre-Warzone leader boards on evevalkyrie.com31 shortly after the Warzone expansion launches.
    VALKYRIE LEAGUE

We’ve learned a lot from the Valkyrie League Beta and the community’s valuable feedback. In Warzone, the Valkyrie League will initially be unavailable. We aim to bring a new and vastly improved version of the Valkyrie League in an update after Warzone launch.

With such a wide array of changes, we welcome your feedback and questions - please visit the official Warzone Changes feedback and questions thread here.

We’d like to thank all pilots for their continuing of EVE: Valkyrie and we look forward to entering the Warzone with you.

And to add to that, here's the FAQ and the dev blog post.

The Warzone expansion dramatically upgrades the EVE: Valkyrie experience for both new and current players, introducing a huge range of exciting new features and gameplay systems. Bursting out of VR and onto TVs and monitors, EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone will enable PC and PlayStation®4 gamers to join the ranks of the Valkyrie without the need for a VR headset.

Since its debut on Oculus Rift in March 2016, EVE: Valkyrie has launched on PlayStation®VR and HTC Vive®, introduced cross-platform play and received five extensive game updates. Naturally you will have a lot of questions about how the update will work. This thread will serve as a Warzone FAQ and over the next month, we’ll be linking through to all our upcoming EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone Devblogs, Videos, Game Guides and more.
In the meantime, here’s a quick EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone FAQ:

What is EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone?

EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone is the new, major expansion to EVE: Valkyrie which launches on 26 September 2017. For more information read this blog.

Will there be more modes added in the upcoming EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone expansion?

Yes, the Warzone expansion will also feature two new maps – ‘Fleet’, a Sisters of EVE space station, and ‘Outpost’, a mysterious Drifter base – that will bring even more aspects of the rich EVE Online universe to the world of the EVE: Valkyrie.

The Warzone expansion also introduces an exhilarating new game mode, ‘Extraction’, which mixes combat and navigational challenges, forcing pilots to use the environment to their advantage.

Will I be able to play EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone without a VR headset?

Yes, the Warzone expansion is designed to be perfectly balanced and playable in both VR and flatscreen on PC and PS4 equally.

Is the flatscreen version of EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone different to the VR version?

The Warzone expansion is a single game that supports both VR and flat screen play across PS4 and PC. The game has been modified to support flatscreen users and therefore handles and plays slightly differently than it does in VR. Nevertheless, all in-game content – including maps, ships, modes, progression etc. – is exactly the same, and all of our users, regardless of mode or format will be on battling on the same servers.

Can EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone be played with a Keyboard and Mouse?

Yes, the Warzone expansion brings keyboard and mouse support. We will be working closely with our community to fine tune this configuration following any feedback we receive.

What joysticks or controllers will EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone support?

    • PlayStion 4 & PlayStation VR: DualShock 4 Controller and the Thrustmaster T-Flight HOTAS 4 joystick.
    • PC, HTC Vive & Oculus Rift: Xbox 360, Xbox One and Steam controllers. The option to map controllers, including HOTAS, is also available

Do either flatscreen or VR players have a competitive advantage?

Our aim is to ensure complete parity between different versions of EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone across different controller input methods. We’ve been conducting extensive balance testing throughout Warzone’s development and we’ve found that there are strengths and advantages to each style and control scheme that compensate for each other. Rest assured we will be working closely with our community at launch and beyond to ensure the experience is fair and competitively comparable.

Will flatscreen and VR players be able to Squad up?

Yes, provided the players are both using the same platform e.g. a HTC Vive player can squad with a flatscreen Steam player; a PS4 players can squad up with a PSVR player via PSN).

Can I squad up with my friend on a different platform?

The list of available pilots for a squad is restricted by the platform being played on. For example, PS4 players may only squad up with other PS4 players. However, all pilots will be playing on the same servers, providing true cross-play between PS4, PSVR, PC, HTC Vive and Oculus Rift.

Can I transfer my existing account over to Warzone?

No need, all existing owners of Valkyrie will be automatically upgraded to EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone.

I’m a previous EVE: Valkyrie VR owner. Do I need to create a new account to play the flatscreen version?

All existing owners of EVE: Valkyrie will be automatically upgraded to EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone at no additional charge.

Will the old version of EVE: Valkyrie still be available once the EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone expansion is released?

EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone is a mandatory free game upgrade for existing players. Once released, the original version will no longer be accessible.

If I own EVE: Valkyrie on one of the supported platforms (HTC Vive, Oculus Rift, PlayStation VR), will I be able to access the game on another supported platform for free, or will it require an additional purchase?

An additional purchase will be required to play EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone on an extra platform, as an account sold specifically for a determined platform will not be able to log-in to a different platform. For example, Rift credentials will only work on Rift; the same goes for PS VR and HTC Vive. Please note that any codes for in game items such as War Chests (Gold) are also platform specific.

We are currently in beta for Oculus Touch controller support. For more information, please visit our help center.

If I own EVE: Valkyrie on two different platforms, can I transfer my Founders Pack flightsuit, avatars and other items between accounts?

No, the contents of the EVE: Valkyrie Founder’s Packs are tied to your unique, individual purchase of the game for that platform. No transfers between platforms of in game currencies, callsigns, XP, content, or anything else is available.

What will happen to my Gold and Silver and how will the new Warzone economy change my Pilot?

When Warzone launches, your remaining Gold balance will be converted into Gold reward capsules. Silver will be converted to Silver at the new rate. Any remaining time on implants will be converted into Silver, as will the total value of cosmetic ship items being retired. All cosmetic pilot items will remain available to you. Your player rank will remain unchanged, and you’ll be compensated with reward capsules depending on your rank when you upgrade to the Warzone expansion. You can get the full details of how Warzone will affect you here - www.evevalkyrie.com/changes

Where can I find a list of Warzone’s upcoming new ships and Ultra abilities?

Patience, pilot. We will be revealing a full list of EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone’s new ships and their abilities closer to launch. Follow us on our social channels and keep your eyes on evevalkyrie.com for further updates.

Do I need PS Plus to play EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone on PlayStation 4 or PlayStation VR?

We strongly recommend that PlayStation players have PS Plus so that you can enjoy EVE: Valkyrie’s online multiplayer gameplay. PlayStation players without PS Plus will not be able to enter the multiplayer menus so they are excluded from our PvP and Co-op modes, as per the platform’s requirement.

How much will EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone cost to purchase?

EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone will have a suggested retail price of $29.99/€29.99. (Includes VAT where applicable. Actual retail prices may vary and are determined by individual retailers.)

Do you intend to make EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone available on a disc?

There are currently no plans for physical distribution of the Warzone expansion.

Please note: For questions on changes to current pilot accounts, and how the new Warzone economy may change your Pilot please visit this thread for full details. The dev team are working full force to get this awesome update into your hands, but we’ll answer as much as we possibly can.

Aside from including a non-VR version of the game, the Warzone expansion includes:
    • New, next-generation fleet of ships with greater focus on specialised roles (assault, shotgun, sniper etc.)
    • A unique mod-based progression for every ship that allow further customisation of stats based on your preferred play-style
    • New Ultra abilities that can change the course of a battle with well-timed execution
    • 2 stunning new maps: Fleet – a Sisters of EVE station preparing for war, and Outpost – a remote Drifter structure that holds the key to new technologies
    • Mouse & keyboard support, with the option to fully key bind to your preference
    • New Capsule based reward system (with randomised loot!)
    • The exciting new CTF style game mode - Extraction
    • Updated and improved cockpit interiors and HUD, and fully revised menus and UI throughout the game.

To further celebrate the launch of Warzone, we are increasing the Rank cap to 60, and including 10 new Drifter-themed Rank icons to peacock your efforts. You can find out even more details here.

We’ve long held the belief that cross play between PC and console is essential for building our community and sharing the awesome gameplay we’ve been refining since our launch in March 2016. The ambitious new goal of delivering an experience that can now be played across VR and non-VR is now in sight. It’s entirely up to you how you play EVE: Valkyrie – Warzone, either in or out of virtual reality. With the expansion, you’ll still have access to all the content from our five major game updates since launch. All our pilots will be flying and dying together on the same servers, same battles… same game.

It’s been a long and exciting journey since Valkyrie started life as EVE-VR (or E:VR) way back in 2012. It was thanks to the overwhelming positive reception at Fanfest (and beyond) that CCP had faith to invest in this new and exciting direction for a game, and in supporting cutting-edge technology that is still in its infancy. That investment paid off, and EVE: Valkyrie remains a poster child for the incredible immersion that VR brings to games.

Our fans have continued to fuel development with regular feedback and suggestions on a wide range of topics, from gameplay balancing to feature design. We’ve updated and improved the game on an almost monthly basis and the version of Valkyrie you’ll be playing in September will represent a labour of love, for both devs and fans alike. These conversations all started at Fanfest and on the forums. I’m excited to see what happens next when owning a VR headset is no longer a requirement.

Moreover, it’s thanks to the rich tapestry of EVE Online that we’ve been able to deliver such a deep and compelling fantasy. Our characters, our ships, our locations, are all part of New Eden. EVE: Valkyrie - Warzone deepens this connection as we introduce more lore and narrative from the EVE universe with the inclusion of Drifter technology. This technology has escalated the war between the Valkyrie and Schism as both sides fight to gain tactical advantage. The arms race has led to the birth of an entirely new fleet of ships and advanced modifications. It’s a fresh start for all pilots, and a great time to get on board.

I look forward to seeing some new pilots in our clone vats!
