used to play this a bit years back when I was flatssharing with some other dudes we used to have pretty epic matches lasting for hours heh.
We allowed all cards so unglued and unhinged were allowed in moderation ofc and good fun tended to be had by all...
Had a cat deck from that cat expansion that came out which could be insane if you got certain cards out and would rip through people, also had an angel deck and I ended up making a wierd deck that had some odd mechanic to it that made me kinda untouchable will need to dig it out to see if I can remember what I did with it...
The latest unhinged set was a lot of fun, I remember buying a few boosters just to see what kind of hilarious mechanics they could come up with. Came with some really nice artwork on the Land cards.
Now say, if there was a player who stopped paying attention to this game after the Scourge block, what would you say has been changed and added since then?
Whats new since Scourge block?
- New card type, Planeswalker: a permanent that you can use once every turn, they have loyalty (some sort of lifepoints of their own) that you can choose to go up or down, depending on abilities. Attackers can choose to attack the planeswalker or the defending player. Some of them are really ridiculous, like the 80+$ Jace, the Mind Sculptor.
- New card type, tribal. For example, there are sorceries that count as a goblin. Not used in later sets anymore.
- New rarity - Mythic. Which are six times as rare as normal rares, and if they are tournament playable, they are really silly expensive (see Jace, Tarmogoyf, Baneslayer, Primeval Titan, Vengevine, etc). Helps Wizards sell packs I guess, but instead of buying a standard tournament deck, some people would rather buy a car or something.
- Hybrid Mana; For example for r/g you can pay either R or G.
- Colored artifacts
- the power creep is rampant, creatures nowadays are much stronger than they used to be. Creatures either have no abilities and have more power/toughness than casting cost (1 Mana 3/3, 3 Mana 5/4s are nothing special), or they have some sort of "when ~ comes into play" ability.
- Current counterspells suck a lot. Kids nowadays don't like having their spells countered.
Other than that, not really much. Game is still fun to play casually with friends, despite all of the above. Especially cube drafting, that's awesome.

I use OCTGN with my friends. It's a generic card game framework, but someone quite helpfully create a M:tG ruleset, uploaded a massive load of cards, and packaged it all nicely: OCTGN w/ MtG Cards. You can create your own card sets; it's a pita, but possible to do and not too awful once you know how the files all fit together.
