So the wife is do to birth our child in July so we figured now would be a good time to look at getting a new digital camera and ditch the ancient one.
I fancy the Sony Alpha NEX-5. Do any of you have any experience with this device? Any suggestions on like featured cameras are welcome of course.

I had this camera, it was pretty kick ass (NEX-5 in [can't remember color, I think Black] w/ 18-55), unfortunately mine was jacked from my car (lololol, never making that fuckup again).
There's rumors of an NEX-7 coming out although the time schedule is unknown, it's a great camera if you value size. If you want to do anything even more serious you really have no upgrade paths.

If you are using a 'good' camera - then it's really using good glass. Canon and Nikon win for SLRs, Leica (you rich cunts) win for not SLR, and the reason is you can get a million good lenses for them.
How good your body is doesn't matter becasue you'll have a new one in a few years, what glass you have access to does matter.
There are canon and Nikon fanboys, but they both make (and have long made) excelent systems.
Now then - maybe you are a human and not a kit geek. Maybe you just want some nice baby pictures without having a suitcase full of kit with you - then Leica (you rich cunt) or compact IMHO.
More than the camera you need to ge the tequnique, it's twee, but it's true. Look at brilliant baby picutres, get your prorps and plans and copy them.

If you aren't ever going to buy lenses go for the NEX-5, if you think you're going to buy lenses get the NX100 (or something else tiny and micro four thirds).
If you're going to be doing serious photography you wouldn't be asking here and wouldn't be asking for EVIL cameras, period.
Yes, DSLRs are better, they are also probably not what the OP wants.
He should be getting a point and click then, more value for money.
just recently bought myself a nikon d3100 with kit lens and got a 35mm f1.8 prime to go with it, (which appears to be awesome), however if you want a more compact camera i recommend the canon s90 or the newer s95, they are fantastic point and click cameras and offer a lot of creative possibilities, mine was stolen when i got burgled

could go for something like the Canon G12, pretty good and no interchangable lens shenanigans.
at that price point get a decent dSLR that will last you a long while and is eminently expandable. There's two real options, nikon or canon. Fuck sony or pentax. k mount and 4/3rds can suck 4/3rds of a dick.

I have a Canon DSLR and it's grey, ultra fast while offering great control and great picture quality.
However as Aea pointed out the DSLR is big, it's not something I want to lug around where i go. So a small point and shoot, like the Sony NEX is a great choice for what the OP wants. I dont have a point and shoot myself yet though, but I want one.
And fuck Leica those are horrendously expensive. Fucking snob cameras. (I want one)

We (I) looked at the Cannon Rebel and other cameras of similar ilk and found them to be a bit too big and let's be honest, the wife will never figure out how to use 1/4 of the functionality.

You do realize you want the 18-55mm lens right? It won't be super tiny but still small for the excellent picture quality.
I would get the kit with the 16 mm and the 18-55mm lens.
Btw for great camera reviews. http://www.dpreview.com, but I guess it's a tad late to throw that one out there.
