Just install kindle for free on your phone or tablet. There are lots of free classics on it too. To date I've only bought 1 kindle book, and it was more expensive than paper version! Paper version would be too big to actually carry around tho.
beat her into buying one, well try beat her.
Nook Color is more awesome (IMHO).
I was sitting on my kindle in Cairo airport and ran out of books, so I just used it to buy some more seamlessly. I can carry around my entire collection of books without use of an articulated lorry. It looks sexy. I can use it to search my text books.
Not sure if it's available in the UK though.Originally Posted by Aea

[Devec's T2 Rig Shop]- On Demand rig production at a fair price - Small rigs delivered within 24 hours
You can get archos 10" android tablet for £200 in currys I think. Yeah there are those cheaper chinese ones but I wouldn't trust them.
I got an eee slate few days ago (for mum as present lol). First decent windows tablet. Doesn't have very powerful graphics tho, but great for kindle and stuff. Costs £1000 tho.
Kindle has a better screen for the stuff you will be doing most - reading text. The nook is only better if you read a lot of colored comics.Originally Posted by Aea
Why? The Nook has an LCD screen, so efficiently it is like reading books on a PC screen. Meaning your eyes get tired faster and its battery does not last long (compared to the Kindle). The Kindle on the other hand has the newest generation of the pearl eInk screen (which has an higher contrast than the older version, meaning your eyes do not get as stressed) reading on it is efficiently just like reading on a slightly glossy reycled paper. The screen does not glow and needs an outside light source to be readable, just like a normal book. Its battery if you read a LOT (like 5-6 hours a day) lasts around a week. Oh, and it also has half the weight and half the price of the Nook.
tl,dr: The only advantage of the Nook is the color screen, the kindle is better *everywhere* else.
The only real alternative to the Kindle3 are the new Sony eReaders, the PRS-650 (same screen size as kindle) and the PRS-350 (smaller) which are the only other ereaders which have also the newest pearl eInk screen. The cost around twice as much as the kindle, use epub instead mobi files and weight very slightly less (for the 650, the 350 weights a good deal less than the kindle, but also has a smaller screen). Oh, and do not buy the older Sony ones - you still might find them cheap somewhere, but they are singificantly worse than the new models.
Personally I bought an eReader primary because I was sick of either throwing books away or packing them up. I find reading on it compared to normal books quite pleasant, I especially like that you can read with one hand (meaning you can hold the eReader and flip the pages with the same hand) and do not have to hold the book all the time so your pages do not flip. I kinda miss the "new book smell" though. And quickly going to the beginning of the book and back (if you want i.e. to look at a map there) is a bit annoying. Getting books quite literary the second you buy them is very nice too.
Overall I would definately buy it again. And did already - those things are a bit fragile, if you plan to use them outside the house I recommend getting a padded case (my first one broke when I slipped on ice in winter outside with it in my bag without a case). But not the overpiced amazon ones - you do not need one in which you can read in, just one where you can store the kindle when you are not using it). Same goes for the sony, I doubt they are any less fragile.
If Sony or Kindle entirely depends if you dislike Amazon or do not care. Personally I am in the "do not care" area. Both the "official" shops of the companies use DRM on their books, there are sellers which sell books without DRM for both file types and you can get *cough* "cheap" eBooks for both. IMO Amazon has a bigger selection of books. The Kindle3 comes in a WiFi and G3 version. The G3 Version has (for UK costumers) also (AFAIK) unlimited internet which can be nice if you have no smartphone. For non US/UK costumers (and smartphone users) it is not worth the money though IMO, the WiFI is just fine. Unless being able to buy books from amazon when you are in holiday is important to you.
Some people go a bit "foam-before-mouth" because of DRM (where Amazon is said to be worse than Sony, but I do not really see any proof of that) and because Amazon has deleted (once) a (classic) book bought from them from Kindles cause there were license issues (the one they bought could not be used for the electronic version of the book). But I mean seriously... I highly doubt this will ever be an issue for me, and *if* I will just get the "cheap" version of the book or use a tool to remove the DRM. Using that as argument which eReader to buy seems a bit![]()
Oh, and generally, get "calibre", it is a nice tool for converting eBooks without DRM from one file format into another.
the 'global' wireless connection is pretty neat, I just bought one.
The thing I like most about it (owned one about a week now) is that its tiny compared to say, an Ipad, so you can hold it with one hand for a long time (you know, fap to twilight) and has big "next page" buttons on both sides.
Find someone with one, and hold it. You'll see how big of difference size/weight can be.
Why not an ipad with the (free) kindle app?
This seems to defeat the whole purpose of these e-readers.Originally Posted by Aramendel

Also hurting your eyes less.
If I wanted an LCD screen I'd look at a fucking ipad or something like that.

If you buy the 3G Kindle for the "free internet" be sure to research if it applies to your country though. I know that it does for US, 99% sure canada and England too, I *think* Netherlands as well. Possibly others.
Germany (and nother countries) can only use the amazon site and the english wikipedia.
Not that the Kindle internet browser is that good, that is. Tried it, would only use it in an emergency if I really really need to know something. If that feature is important to you note that the Sony has no 3G Version, so no internet on it for you.
Also, if you want an eReader because you want to take notes on books - not too exited about that feature on the Kindle. The Sony is likely a bit better there since it has a touchscreen.
And, lastely, while the Kindle (and Sony) can read PDFs avoid eBooks in that file format. They are really bad to read on them because PDFs have a fixed pagesize which is usually a good deal bigger than the eInk screen, so you have to scroll around constantly which gets really annoying really fast. If you really really have to the Sony is slightly better for PDFs, but I highly doubt it is any way near an "enjoyable read".
td;dr: Do not buy (any) eReader primary for a) internet b) taking notes and/or c) reading PDFs. They are not good devices for that.
