Whoa, that was a close one! Well, not really. http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/2005_YU55

Spoilered due to size not ball crushing, I promise.
I am a fan of the Campanian stage of the Late Cretaceous. Hot house world, all the classic late dinosaurs, jungles at the south pole. Never been able to find a good big map of it damn it.

As for the moon being destroyed the most likely result is a massive bombardment of fragments. These would heat the atmosphere up by the combined friction of their re-entries to the point where the temperature at sea level would reach hundreds of degrees. Loss of tides would be the least f our worries.

I take it you are looking for something poster sized? I grabbed a 1200 x 600 image and a 1584 x 1008 image from The Geology News Blog. You may be able to make a mini poster on ledger paper with that.

      Spoiler:

Oh, I like the Late Cretaceous too if only for one reason - the Laramide Orogeny!

(Higher) Life on earth would almost certainly end because it is reaaaaally doubtful that the moon can be taken out *without* massive chunks on it falling to earth.
This, basically. Though if done properly we could just end up with some pretty rings and possibly a new ice age due to dust from the destruction.

Perhaps the thing to note here is that there is just about nothing in the solar system that could actually destroy the moon, at least for another 5 billion years.

What if it gets hit by something at just the right angle and force so it leaves the earths orbit to find a nicer planet?

Without actually researching it I'm thinking there is nothing moving through the solar system any time soon with enough mass or velocity to dislodge the moon.

If the nuclear fuel dumps up there explode it could even fly off into space and weekly adventures. We'd be totally fucked then.

On the other hand if there was something powerful enough to move the moon off course or whatever, we'd probably just be thankful it didn't hit the Earth.

Assuming we'll still be alive afterwards, that is. Realistically the only way to move the moon out of earths orbit without destroying it would be a bigger gravitational force. An option there would be a rogue planet (a planet which was ejected from its own solar system (usually when its sun went nova) which has become a cosmic bullet) crossing the solar system which is unlikely, but possible.
However, same force would also effect earth it might push us into a higher or lower orbit into the sun (which would be bad obviously), it certainly will play havoc with the asteroid and kuniper belt which will cause a significantly higher chance of asteroids hitting earth for a while and its passage will probably trigger ultra massive earthquakes and floods (not 100% sure about that though).

But anyway, could we stop this discussion here? It is nice and stuff, but totally offtopic. MOAR GIFS!
