Checked both an SP2022 and HK USP45, and both will only drop to half cock if the trigger is released before the hammer actually makes it past the half cock position. 226 is an older design though, so it may be different, I don't own one to check.
Interestingly, on the USP, when you release the trigger a bit you can "feel" the hammer load on the trigger, as if you were in double action mode.
