Is this just some weird bureaucratic end-run to try and get a better rifle into the hands of the riflemen, or are the Marines really serious about eliminating the LMG from the squad all together?

My read from it was more of the USMC wants to backdoor a piston driven AR into their squads.
As a britfag I've read quite a bit about trials conducted with the LSW vs GPMG vs LMG (L86/M240/M249 respectively). A lot of the conclusions note that at a platoon level, in the hands of a trained operator, the LSW is considerably more 'lethal' and better at suppression (ie rounds within X feet of a position out to 800m) than either of the automatic weapons. The problem is that the LSW is considered as 'the crow cannon' something you give to the new guy because it's heavier, bulkier, etc etc and it's actually been gradually phased out because of this perception rather than actually training people to use it. Meanwhile the UK recently introduced a 7.62 DMR and because it's special and different people who get given it are actually allowed proper range time with it and trained in it's use. Suddenly it's a case of 'Yeah, most of our kills come from this now'. It's not so much because of the weapon but the extra training. Marksmanship standards and range qualifications across the British Army are pretty atrocious to be honest.
