What is it that makes a $2000 scope $2000? I see stuff designed for pellet guns and such at big5 all the time for $60. Is there anything besides the obvious build quality and optics that makes it several orders of magnitude more expensive? (mostly asking because my next gun purchase might be something I can shoot long range with)
Scopes aka "glass" varies ALOT in quality. Cheap $35 scopes will not live up to serious use, tend to loose their zero during a coarse of fire, and have terrible parallax. It's like comparing Mitsubishi Lancer or Ford Escort to it's road rally version. Street cars break down after hard use but you can still use a track if you go slow.Quote:

Pick up a Nightforce or S&B and you feel like you can hammer nails with them (probably could). So if I wanted to plink stuff with my .22 at 75 yards, a cheap scope is fine. If I wanted to find a 1000 yard range and shoot .308, I'd need something of significantly better quality.

also, went to the range yesterday. highlight was my FAL having ruptured casehead. The kaboom blew out the bottom of the mag; other than that, the gun is fine. I'm planning on getting it looked over and check the headspacing just to be sure, but im pointing the finger at ye cheap steel wolf ammo, which i know FALs dont like. I dont know if the extractor tried to pull the case out while it still was pressurized, or if was not in battery when the firing pin hit; my buddy was shooting it and he was accidentally bump firing it quite a bit (i guess he couldn't handle the recoil) and/or i've set the trigger too light (~5 lbs from the standard 11 lbs).
if it was and out of battery detonation due to the bump fire, im a bit stumped; the firing pin is not exposed until after the bolt is locked and the carrier is at least 3/4 of the way over the bolt, i.e. that case is fully in the chamber. I have the problem case with me; i'll post some pics when i get the chance.
also, now i have a bunch of steel .308 that i dont know what to do with.
e. the ammo more specifically was the rebranded Herter's steel case; just googling the name brings up a bunch of kaboom posts :/
The Herters issues were years ago though. They screwed up some batches with overloaded rounds. The overpressured caused the kabooms. Did you get a chance to check the brass for overpressure signs? Andy severely flattened primers or did you get case separation at the rim?. Did you check to see if the barrel is clear? There's always the chance that a case failure dumps enough gas that the bullet doesn't have enough to clear the barrel.Quote:

Does it have to be a pistol? An AR-15 would do both of those quite well, hell any .223 would do great, so like a breakdown .223 or something along those likes. Taurus makes a nice little .223 breakdown for $200 or so. They call it a wizard or something, you can get it in all kinds of calibers.Quote:

I think Cue has the best advice here. Personnally If I were faced with such an animal and didn't want a .223 platform, but wanted some more punch? Id probably go with a CX4 in either .45 or 9mm. Just remember though, this is a pistol in carbine form. GL m8.
75ft is pushing it when trying to hit a vital organ on a relatively small moving animal with a pistol, unless you are a damn good shot. typical pistol ranges are <30ft.
