What should I shoot for the first time
Are you actually interested in shooting, or are you just going to go to a range and shoot a quick 50 rounds or so just so you can say you've shot a gun?
If its the first one, I'd recommend a bolt rifle with iron sights. Doesn't have to be bolt action, but I find whenever I've taken people to shoot for the first time that having to manually cycle the gun between each shot, leads to people putting a bit more effort into making sure they don't skimp on their stance, sight picture etc. It's also cheaper as ammo tends to last a bit longer. This will teach you more about actual shooting than anything else you can do on your first try tbh.
Second one? Anything that doesn't involve a flat range and a shotgun.
Just not a school
I'd say join the cops and in 6-8 weeks you could probably whack a black guy, just make sure he's really black and not a mexican or smtn

also belongs to the ordnance thread since it's 20mm+
I was thinking of starting with something like a ruger .22. Is there such thing as too small of a calibre to start out with?
Also Enfields look really nice but I'm not sure if it's a sign of progress that an Irish person could own one or if it's me being a chump by buying one
Nothing wrong at all with starting small, you won't develop a flinch and you'll actually be able to afford to shoot it. Ruger 10/22 is a great gun and cheap. A bolt action 22 is a good idea as well.
I thought lagman meant what to shoot at a range? Surely just buying something with no clue is a straight way to a disappointment.
Anything .22lr is basically a noobtube, there is little reason to get one for something other than training or sport.
