I'm late to reply here but in addition I'd look at Kahr's offerings in 9mm or .40, or a small revolver.
My CCW started as a Glock 19, then changed to a Glock 26 (subcompact) and now is a S&W 642 (hammerless snubby that weighs half what my G26 did).
Holsters are extremely important. I didn't like what was out there and started making my own a few years ago. My latest is a kydex pocket/IWB holster with a removable shield plate to eliminate printing (I like tight clothes)

It is extremely dumb that short barreled rifles are somehow more dangerous than a rifle with a 16" barrel. If anything it is less dangerous due to lower velocities. If you're concerned about concealable power, then they should ban the .500 S&W revolvers that are about the same size.
