dunno, for some people the milspecs are too fat. The current trend seems to be really thin handguards with locations to bolt-on rails where you need it; also it lets you play out your chris costa fantasies.
personally, if i had the moneys to spend, i'd get one tacticool ar with a modular add-rails-where-you-need-them free-float handguard, and one ar with a carry handle upper, 20" barrel and milspec handguard for that classy look.
870 is easier than a mossberg in my experience, although it's just personal. Same basic premise. Barrel on the Mossberg 500 has the screw attached, the 870 has a nut on it. I like the nut on the 870 better, it's slotted so you can just use a quarter, whereas on the Mossberg it's a screw and isn't slotted, so you'll have to get a pair of pliers if it's too tight.Quote:

Ah, then google C3 or A2 handguards. Those are the old skinny oval style CAR-15 type handguards. I think they only have a single heat shield though while the newer fatter types have double heat shields.Quote:

Original milspec pistol grip is at a sharper angle and made more for shooting prone. There are newer offerings that are at a much lower angle made for shooting while kneeling or standing up. You can pull it into your shoulder easier and they feel better. Now granted, some of that grip weirdness can just be tacticool overload like guys with precision grips and bipods running red dots and such. :facepalm:Quote:
am I the only one who actually enjoys the milspec style grip on a m16/ar15? I see all these AR owners I see running around with custom grips that don't let you easily get up on the grip confuses me. Maybe I am just missing soemthing...

edit: a .22 rifle is always a great first gun. imo lever or pump action is always fun, but something like a ruger 10/22 is also nice. Combine that with the fact that .22 is something like $25 for 500 rounds, and it's hard to beat for a gun that you can just grab and go down to the range without feeling like you're throwing wads of cash at the targets.
The mossberg had a habit of dropping rounds onto the floor, even after a warranted trip to the gunsmith.

If the screw on your mossberg it too tight to remove by hand then you are doing it wrong. It states in the manual with big bold letters that you should finger-tighten it only. The screw is not load bearing, it just prevents the barrel from falling out when the slide is half-racked.Quote:

Another thing to note is that if the ejector on your 870 becomes damaged you have to send it back to the manufacturer as it is not user-replaceable since its riveted in place. However, I dont think ejectors break that often.
The shell lifter on the 500 stays up, which makes topping off your mag easier, whereas the 870's stays down, so you have to push it up insert a new shell into the tube. But as a trade off, you can ghost load the 870 if you feel like showing off.
As for reliability, aside from the occasional lemons, they are both proven systems.
Lastly, the 870 has the advantage of being able to accept mag extensions, while with the 500 you are stuck with the 5 round tube unless you disassemble it and replace it with a longer tube and appropriate barrel, which may require a torch to burn off the locktite. (the 590 solves this, but as a trade off barrel changes are not as quick).

Yeah, that's the same info I had then. I have the 8 rounder so I'm basically SOL unless I want to spend a good chunk of time/money/effort on it (at which point I might as well buy a brand new 500).
