TBH a bit more than I had planned to; the rifle was priced at $915, which was a fair deal considering the availability of them, but what got me was the fact that the seller was in the same state as me, so I ended up paying tax too D: (gerd derm gubment takin mah money). All in all about a grand after tax, shipping, and ffl. (Not to mention I ended up spending another $700 on ammo...)Quote:

I don't think he was talking about M-16s, granted you're right about that, but the M-16 was built around the idea that the average soldier lacked the skill and presence of mind to take full advantage of the the properties of a traditional battle rifle in the heat of combat. One of the biggest obstacles to the adoption of the M-16 (aside from the fact that army brass didn't like a civilian challenging them) was that those in charge of army policy in the 50's and 60's actually believed that US soldiers would go into battle picking off enemies at 500 yards with the iron sights on their new M-14s when their own studies showed that engagements rarely occurred beyond 300 yards and 90% of ammunition was expended with no clear target in sight. The idea that better sights and greater effective range are at all useful in combat is an attractive idea, it makes logical sense, but is ultimately a myth when applied to anyone but a trained marksman.Quote:

please explain? the rear sight is fully hand adjustable for elevation and windage on the M-16's I was issues. It was the front sight which was semi fixed. (you needed a special tool, or a cartridge to adjust it for elevation, no windage adjustment available. )Quote:

I recommend spikes. About 125 USD for stripped lower. I was also recommend 5.56 upper since it can shoot both 5.56 and 2.23 ammo (not vice versa). I had not heard about the Palmetto State lowers cracking. If that is common (check reviews) then stay away like the plague.Quote:

Everything I've read steers me away from any plastic lowers. They just don't hold up. Lowers don't take that much abuse but apparently it's enough to break them. Spike makes awesome lowers, so that's what I'd suggest.
Razor, AK sights are open, meaning the entirely cover the target, and are a bit of a bitch to line up. They work, and are adjustable, but they aren't awesome. M4 iron sights are closed, and highly adjustable. You have more target view with M4/M16 irons than you do with an AK.
AK sights are far forward, and are only a small grooved leaf style. This makes them more difficult to use accurate due to the short sight radius. The open topped grooved leaf style has been omitted by most nations already as it was superseded by superior hooded style sights. Sunlight reflection off of the leaf tips was always an issue since it was easy to loose sight picture and aim too low.Quote:

The new AK-12 has moved the rear sight back to the rear of the weapon and the rear sight while still a ramp, is now an aperture style rather than an open groove. This makes it easier to bring up and acquire a target rather than chase the front post when trying to do accurate fire. The Russian Army hasn't exactly been living in a bubble and has been following western designs for a while. The result is the new AK-12 which is going to replace the AK-74. Notice the integrated rails, the location of the finger accessable safety and fire control.

Lower receivers only have to do one thing and that's make sure the holes are drilled where they're supposed to go. Mil-spec in other words. It doesn't matter the brand as long as it's metal. It's what you put inside that matters. On average you'll spend $80-$120 for a lower depending on where you go to get it. You'll also have to do the paperwork. The paperwork and shipping makes buying at a local store right on par with buying from online and having it shipped. Either way you'll need to have it shipped to someone with an FFL who will charge you a fee. They can NOT ship it to your house unless you have a Federal Firearms License (FFL). Fees can be anywhere from $20 to $60 depending on the license owner. Gunshows are usually a good place to pick up a stripped lower as local shops will often try and badger you with add ons or tell you they only have complete lowers. If you do go to a gun show, be sure to bring your ID, social security card, and work information as they will do the background check on you right then and there then and have you fill out the 4473.Quote:

**NOTE: you have to be 21 to purchase a stripped lower as they can be converted from rifle to "pistol".
I'm currently running a Rock River lower and USGI lower parts kit. Others I know have used Del-ton, CMT, Rock River, and Colt parts kits with no issues. Many have been through classes and have a few thousand rounds through their rifles. These range from $40-$60.
There is no need for anti-rotational pins unless you plan on shooting some heavy calibers through you rifle or convert it to a 9mm sub gun.
You don't need to spend lots of money for a good lower receiver. You do have to spend a lot for a good upper. You get what you pay for on that front.
If you're building an extremely long range AR-10 or AR-15(in something other than 5.56) a better quality lower is needed. Tighter hole tolerances, etc. Otherwise, yes, get a cheap lower and spent everything you can on an upper.Quote:
