I'm personally interested in guns because I like killing, but FHC got super weird and aggressive when I asked for advice buying a knife. So, seeing as guns seem to be accepted I want to shoot things instead.

i dont "get" the attraction either, in my eyes the rifle is a tool just like the field spade or the company heavy weapons, it's something i genuinely hoped, and still hope to never have to use in anger. the "neatness" of the whole experience wears off quickly and marksmanship becomes just another skill, like doing the dishes.
i do find the underlying mechanics of firearms interesting and odd as it sounds the "rituals" surrounding firearms maintenance are oddly satisfying, probably because you can easily see and feel the effect, the difference between a well cared for m/95 and one that's dirty is quite noticeable.
I also liked disassembling, cleaning and assembling my rifle or the LMG much more than actually shooting it. Cleaning and oiling a gun is pretty meditative, I think.
But yeah, I never understood the exhilaration of shooting even though I was quite decent at it. To me was a shock for five seconds when you start hearing shots go off but once the shock passes, then it's just aiming and pulling the trigger to put rounds on target. Like Liare, I just felt it being one of the skills you needed to master to soldier, like assembling the half-company tent etc.
- Community
- Father and Son activity
- Learning to and maintaining firearms
- Competitions, events, courses
So pretty much the same as any other hobby then.
Good answer, cheers. As i say its not something that ive got any familiarity with, so was curious.
Np mate
The US gun community seems quite welcoming too the UK one in my experience has been quite insular and elitist.
Well the UK gun community is a bastion of landed toffs and people who dress up in tweed to shoot pheasants. It's pretty difficult to enforce such exclusiveness in America when you pick up a firearm in walmart.
MFW my old man is a land owner and legitimately has a tweed shooting outfit.

It's been nice knowing you
Before i quit i worked with a guy from a fairly rich farming family, and he grew up on the farm. Really nice guy but his childhood stories are from a different planet. His dad also went shooting with the other local landowners, and also wore tweed.
What is it with fucking tweed?
Everyone's packing around here, farmers...farmers mums...
