So far we know:

Only 13 episodes. Speculation on the cause leans toward the splitting of the work between two studios to resources being used on a film. Probably the former in my mind.

Anyways, discuss/post spoilers etc.

Someone posted an image of someone's Twitter that there will be many seasons, some shorter but for a good reason. Prob near end of the megathread. Not like they are ending it.

A few reasons for 13 episode season 3 I've thought of:

Reassignment of staff for movie production.
Redistributing staff between Pony and other shows.
Splitting production into 2 half seasons per year, all year.
Moving production to spring-summer release.
65 ep alignment for easy to negotiate syndication.

They already split production between two studios.

It will be a 2 hour long episode about the cutie mark crusaders getting their cutie marks.

Nah, that's the story arc of Season 3. I'm serious here, having them not get their cutiemarks all at once, and the issues that would create for their friendship is a awesome idea for a story ark. No violence, kids friendly, but still has drama and something to learn about patience and friendship. Movie should be Luna and Tia discovering elements and defeating Q. Maybe intermixed with present time story of some problem with Elements themselves.

So John De Lancie will be performing as narrator for Mozart's play "The Magic Flute" at the Chicago Ravinia Music Festival the 16th and 18th, and he's invited Bronies to show up, enjoy, and receive free autographs (of anything) afterwards. That just so happens to be the same weekend I'm visiting my family in the area with my GF, so we've grabbed some tickets.

:)

I'm actually laughing at all the sad in that thread.

According to Faust's idea for earth ponies, she's pretty much just an earth pony with two extra limbs? I mean, sure if you get teary eyed over ponies being born as earth ponies... but if not? She's still more physically able than Applebloom, or any other earth pony that isn't directly involved in farming.

I just don't get it.

Didn't Faust herself explicitly said a year or two ago that Scoota had no physical issues and just hasn't learned how to fly yet? I mean, jeebus, I could google up the very quote on it but...

The recession has hit Ponyville hard.

Soon after resorting to burlap sacks and old bed sheets as material Rarity is forced to close shop. She now volunteers at a local shelter where the Royal Guard flies in bales of hay to feed the homeless.

The Apple Family finally lost the farm - while a quarter of Ponyville is starving, Filthy Rich has to let most of his staff go at Rich's Barnyard Bargains due to lack of moveable product. Rich's Barnyard Bargains was the largest employer in Ponyville.

The neighboring Crystal Empire has not been affected as hard yet. When asked about possible relief assistance to Ponyville, Princess Cadence only responded with "My wings are sooo pretty!" and "I love it when you comb my hair!". Prince Shining Armor was not available for comment.

Assuming pics are legit. First three are obviously same episode. Crystal city is obviously related to Crystal Fair episode. Yeey Trixie, but could be a red herring inserted by source of the leak. Also since first three pics have clear sky and lack toxic spills and skeletons, and we haven't seen any news about deals between Hasbro and Zenimax, they sadly can't be official Fallout Equestira episode, no matter how I want them to be. :D Guessing a "bad possible future due to someone (most likely Twilight) making a very bad call" episode. PS. Trixie is both awesome and cute in those pics.

Ashleigh Ball used Dolly Parton as a base for Applejack's voice, so "too country" isn't possible. Faith Hill doesn't sound old enough to be a mom, and Reba sounds like AJ, so that's why I thought of her. Reba also has TV acting experience.

Derpy ep will obviously never happen though, not unless its last roundup 2.0 Derpy

Nu11u5
September 6 2012, 06:52:51 PM
I think there are a lot of ways they could pull it off well if they portray Derpy as a sympathetic character who is challenged with a disability, but that tends to be a taboo topic in today's overly PC children's programming.

It's odd - you have shows like Sponge Bob pull all kinds of imbecilic shit, but try to show a legitimately disabled person and encourage kids to relate to them with some comedy and suddenly parents flip their lids. I'm not claiming that 'Last Roundup' was 100% OK, but I think the reaction to it (from both sides) was over blown.

But it's all good: you can't be ablest if you pretend those people don't exist.

Derpy belongs to the fans, and the other problem is if they did do an ep with her, which version do we get? Personally I always like the 'heart-warming, challenged and awkward, single parent to Dinky' Derpy, but that wouldn't fit very well into the show necessarily.

Another taboo topic - mortality - is on that chart. Sesame Street did that back in the 80's when a cast member pasted away and they wanted to explain to the kids watching why he wouldn't be around anymore. Something tells me no show would touch that with a 10 foot pole in today's atmosphere.

I would rather they kept Derpy as a background character in a 'Wheres Wally' sense as opposed to fan pandering. Also agree on the mortality part, too much effort to pull off just for the sake of it. Only thing stopping me editting it is with more reasonable entries is my inability to use photoshop.

I have no problem with a 'where's Wally' Derpy, but Pinky used to be an slightly annoying airhead, and then they had her save Ponyville from those parasprites in a most Pinky way. And suddenly Pinky had a lot more depth to it. I don't see why they can't do something similar to Derpy, even in a side story, Derpy confounds expectations in a particularly derpy way.

I don't think it's necessary, but I don't see how it is impossible to do in a show that already dealt with bullying, low self-esteem, and so many other supposedly 'taboe' topics!

"A magical empire has suddenly appeared in the arctic north of Equestria, and PRINCESS CELESTIA needs TWILIGHT SPARKLE and her friends to find a way to protect it. While her friends try to keep the Crystal Ponies occupied at the Crystal Faire, TWILIGHT SPARKLE searches for the hidden Crystal Heart that is the key to keeping their empire safe from harm!"

Directed By: Jayson Thiessen & James Wootie Wooton

Part One Storyboarded By: Tom Sales & Johnny Castuciano

Part Two Storyboarded By: Raven Molisee & Nicole Wang

...having read the suggestion, yeah, there's really no way that the "crystal heart" isn't Cadence.

lol.

"Suddenly appeared" appears to be a trend of some sort. Cadence, Twilight's brother, now a whole freaking empire.
Also... not a kingdom. An Empire! In the name of the empress!!! And if the empress is Cadence, then Shining Armor is an Emperor...

FOR THE EMPRAH

Some vector artist either done goofed or Twilight gains a pair of wings at some point in Season 3. Given the state of the other vectors in use, such as Canterlot being flipped horizontally, the former is more likely than the latter. :p

this might just have being a mistake, but I could't avoid noticing that Twi's new wings do not look like regular Pegasus wing (with only the long feathers growing directly form the body) much look much more like Luna's and Tia's wings with the larger size and an clear articulation in the middle

I Hope I made myself understood :)

Well I'll be damned, those wings use a new vector, different from the normal Pegasi, Luna, Celestia, or Cadance wings. Iiiinteresting.

As awesome as that would be, surely that would never happen unless it were in the final episode. It would basically end the show, because obviously if she were an alicorn why would she stay in ponyville with her friends? How would she even relate on a similar level to them anymore? I just don't see any way this could happen and still have the show continue.

http://www.mlponies.com/2012/11/07/the-difficult-third-album/

I'm eager to see how the series progress with Meghan McCarthy at the story editing helm. I listened to an interview with her (and several other well known animation writer veterans) over the summer. While most of her peers got into the industry to do cartoons, she actually intended to do drama. Her favorite films includes Star Wars, and one of her projects in art school was a murder flick. So, if the tone of the show changes (for better or for worse) we have a good idea who to attribute that too ;)

If only we get several very good "day in life" episodes (and CMCs get their CMs in a non ridiculous/silly manner) than S3 could very well be MLP:FIM swan's song and me happy about that, because they won't be topping this.

I honestly don't know what to make of that episode. It was a great episode but the villain was practically non existent. They have started hinting at a greater story arc, which season 2 missed. Season 1 had the gala. Liked Spike being the hero but seemed a bit of a rushed ending.

Verite Rendition
November 11 2012, 12:28:37 AM
I more or less agree. It was by no means a bad episode, but let me put it this way: how is it that a two-parter (42 minute) episode feels both rushed and feels like very little has happened at the same time? This wasn't really an action episode, nor was it a comedy episode. I guess it was an exposition episode?

But hey, at least we got to see Spike save the day.:) Now he's enshrined on a stained glass window just like the rest of the characters (how many windows does Celestia have, anyhow?). And we have both Celestia and Twilight using "dark" magic; this is the first time the series has really delved into the concept at all.

Also, for anyone that called out Cadance's flank matching the Crystal Heart (and the resulting significance of Cadance to the Crystal Empire), you shall receive no bonus points. That was obvious to the point that it hurts.:p

PS: Gravity reversal for the win!

Pacing was appropriate compared to season 2 opener, but gosh was it underwhelming. I just didn't get a sense of enthusiasm from the voice actors or script writers. Episodes get a grade of C, maybe C-. Here's hoping for better episodes to come.

The Littlest Pet Shop crew, on the other hand, seems to be far more upbeat (Ashleigh especially). Yes, it's a pilot, so it's to be expected, but it actually seemed...refreshing.

I have to say my biggest disappointment was that Somber had zero personality. No lines, no sense of being anything other than a nebulous cloud of menace. Compare and contrast that to NMM and Discord, both of whom were very strongly written and memorable characters.

Just saw the episode. Not bad, It definitly looked like one of those 'hasbro wants to advertize their new products, lets make a episode for it' deals.

only real complaint was that somber wasn't even a character, just a ticking clock. Tbh though, i'd prefer sombra as it is-a malevolant force, vs some over the top oc-do-not-steal baddie.

The biggest tidbits for me are actually pretty much all of the scenes where luna and celestia was in:

Ie

Why did luna look pissed off at twilight in the beginning?

-was she jealous of her since celestia sent twilight off to the crystal empire instead of her?
-was she actually contemplating if twilight had the stuff, not just to save the crystal empire, but to actually be :alicorn: material?

That scene where luna and celestia are standing side by side, with the moon and the sun behind them, and the camera turns to twilight with her cutie mark star behind her, pretty much screams "twilight is going to be an alicorn by the end of the season.

also, dat black book luna conjured up.

Having slept on it I must say that "meh" feeling is starting to set in. Main plot was weak and rushed/incoherent, villain was literally a cardboard cut out. NMM and Q had personality and great lines. Sombra yells and moans a bit.

Still, considering that this ep is likely made by direct call from Hasbro: "yo dawgs, I'm making these crystal ponies toys now, I want a episode for them so people buy more of them, got it!"... it could have been worse. :(

Hints or actual plot were very nice. Greatly increased presence of Luna was nice. All of Mane 6 got their little scenes, even if actual character development was low. :(

I really hope that by time of season ender, and next "epic" two parter, new authors get their grip together to be able to tell a really good and enjoyable story. And that in between with "non epic" eps they will be able to tell nice compact stories with proper pacing and character development.

Could have used a bit more memorable tunes (they sure aren't Winter Wrap Up or This Day-material) and the villain a bit "more", but above-par episodes for sure. Animation is better this season (look at the shading and lighting for instance), story is a bit deeper, characters show a bit more depth/development and there are hints at the prospect of a longer arc.

And I agree the epsiodes were perfectly fine. They won't probably list among my top 5, but there weren't bad either. I agree that the villain could have been a bit scarier, or rather have a bit more to it, but some of the things in it were pretty cool none-the-less. I've got a fun theory about this episode and it tying into other things. Working on an infographic. Meh I've got things to do today.

Today, on over-analyzing a children's TV show...

At the beginning of the episode, Celestia urges Luna not to go to the Crystal Empire to help, claiming that Twilight must do it on her own as a test, but is there another reason?

Inside the Crystal Castle, Twilight finds a door that shows you your worst fears (shall we say, "nightmares").

1000 years ago, Celestia and Luna liberated the Crystal Empire and banished King Sombra, but were unable to find the Crystal Heart.

The Door of Fears lies on the way to the Crystal Heart.

Did Luna find the Door 1000 years ago? Was her worst fear being shunned by her people and her Sister? Was this incident the catalyst that began her transformation into NMM?

Did Celestia send Twilight instead of herself and Luna to prevent the chance of one of her own godly kind from falling again? (Cadence doesn't really count)

Kings Sombra's (the King of Shadows) magic might have been strong enough to corrupt an Alicorn. Suddenly he's not such a weak villain after all.

Pretty solid theory. Going with your theory, I think Shining Armour and Cadence were sent solely to protect and halt King Sombra long enough for Twilight and co to find the heart etc. She was never meant to go looking for a solution and possibly end up like Luna.

I think/hope it isn't the last time we will see King Sombra, he is way under developed for someone who is a big villain. It is just not their style to undercut a character like that, the other 3 had just as long and they managed to develop them greatly. Maybe he will return for the season finale?

My take is that she was supposed to remain in the Empire but they changed that in the post production. Maybe because Hasbro wants a Pink Pony Princes in the Big Pony Castle.

The Crystal ponies even call Cadenza Crystal Princess at some point. Well I wouldn't be surprised if she ruled the Empire before Sombra took over. To back that I say with have the cutie mark and the completed absence of Cadence in the NMM episode, and even more Crystal ponies use their collective happiness or whatever (maybe love) to make awesome gestalt magic and who is a better ruler than a pony whose talent is spreading love?

A Wizard Did It.

(Starswirl maybe?)

'scuse me a sec while I put on my epileptic tree hat (Don't judge me. It's comfy.) and get to work here...

A thousand years ago, when the Crystal Empire was at the height of its glory, there were two young foals. One was a princess, raised in luxury, doted upon, surrounded by admirers. The other was a mere landscaper's apprentice. But he was infatuated with the princess. He watched her from afar, wishing he could find a way to impress her. One day, while using his powers to reshape the gardens, he chanced upon a shard of black crystal, buried deep in the earth. Digging it out of the dirt, he uncovered another shard, and another. Digging deeper, he eventually found himself in a vast cavern of black crystal. A voice spoke to him then, whispering promises of untold power. Power enough to rule the empire. Power to impress the princess. Greedy and foolish, he took the power the Voice offered, and with it, a new name. Sombra.

Soon, all of the empire bowed to his rule, but it was not enough. The princess refused to wed him. In a fit of fury, he cast a curse upon her. If she would be his loving wife, then she would be his trophy. He cursed her to sleep forever inside a great crystal, and displayed the sleeping princess in his throne room, a tribute to his powers.

Years passed, and news of Sombra's dark rule spread to other lands. In Equestria, the sisters Luna and Celestia vowed to stop his tyrannical rule, and united to defeat him. In the aftermath of the great battle, they discovered the sleeping princess in her crystal. Returning to Equestria they consulted the great wizard Starswirl the Bearded. Though he was unable to lift the curse entirely, he weakened its hold, foretelling that in time the curse would break and the princess be freed.

Fin.

There you go, extremely rough draft, treat with extreme caution, written before my morning coffee. But ta-da, epileptic trees and wild mass guessing unite to provide an answer to how Cadance could be 1k years old and still young enough to be Twi's babysitter. You can chalk the lack of memory up to spell-induced amnesia if you like.

And this concludes today's excercise in silly speed writing.

So here's something...

The Crystal Empire is able to generate light and love to spread across Equestria, and it's implied the effect is due to the combination of the crystal that makes up the city and the soul and heart of it's inhabitants.

There are crystal shards scattered all over the face of Equestria.

Significance?

Also, King Sombra kind of reminded me of Lord Suaron during LotR - incorporeal and limited, but not without powerful dark influences. But, it's missing the whole "Ring of Power" deal.

Is Twilight's talent with magic a sign that she's more than another unicorn? It seems likely that Twilight's magic is a sign of something deeper within her, but it's hard to say if there's more to the other five's abilities than their represented Element of Harmony and their special talents at face value. What I hope the writers avoided is making Twilight special and the others banal; I'd hate to see a situation where Twilight is asked to choose between immortality, along with power and responsibility in Equestria, or being able to spend time with her friends. She'd inevitably choose her friends, and something about that choice of an ending would irk me.

Depending on the complexity of the Season 3 story arc, a lot could hinge on the question "just how deep does each of the Mane 6's special talents actually go?" Does Applejack's special talent of running Sweet Apple Acres consist solely of that, or does her talent encompass running farms in general, or something broader still? Is Fluttershy's affiliation with animals limited strictly to creatures, or does she have a one of a kind affinity with nature? Does Rarity's talent for beautification (silly as the gemstones are :p) extend beyond merely making things look good? Is there something more to Rainbow Dash's competitive flying abilities? Is Pinkie Pie just the best at throwing parties, or is her potential to bring joy to anyone and everyone?

If they're going for complexity, I really do hope they choose to explore hidden depths rather than forcing a choice between power and friends.

Bartholomeus Crane
November 13 2012, 10:42:15 PM
I think it is quite clear from the 'origin' episode that Twilight's magic powers are quite 'special'. Or do you think Princess Celestia has a whole slew of personal students she attends to like that?

And from the same episode it is quite clear that Rainbow Dash's Sonic Rainboom is also quite 'special', as it basically was a catalyst for all the mane 6-es 'careers'.

Moreover, as the mane 6, all of them are quite special, as we saw time and time again with the elements of harmony.

But I doubt the writers will let it all boil down to a simple choice, by Twilight, between power and friendship. Each of the mane 6 brings something special and unique to the table, but all elements seem to be required to actually manifest their power. That doesn't seem to stroke well with Twilight having to chose between her friends and something else.

This is exactly why I hope that this choice wasn't written into Season 3.

So the ratings are out.

http://press.discovery.com/us/hub/press-releases/2012/hub-tv-network-new-series-littlest-pet-shop-m-2170/

Of interest: Adults 18-49 (156,000), Kids 6-11 (153,000), Kids 2-11 (342,000)

So adults are outnumbering kids in the standard 6-11 bracket. Only when you add in 2-5 do you outnumber adults. The whole brony thing may be a bit bigger than I estimated...

New clip from next ep.

Looks promising. But all previews for Crystal Empire also looked promising. (as do almost all individual scenes, it was just the global plot that was meh)

And a second clip on EW:

http://family-room.ew.com/2012/11/16/my-little-pony-friendship-is-magic-exclusive-clip/

The way the end of the scene was executed is pretty cool. Not just visually with the inverted spin, but conceptually. She goes in and comes out in a mirrored version of the pool, with her duplicate self waiting for her. She's not the original any more, is she... is she even in the same world? My brain - it's hurt and a little creeped out!

Great ep indeed.

Were Dashs "deal with it" sunglasses canon before this ep?
More continuity: Darin Do, Tank, Fluttershys bear friend.
And my little soviet ponies polka dancing pinkie at 14:46

Hand hooves?!?
Also pretty harsh test. And Twilight zapping without hesitation...

The fridge logic in this episode is very disturbing.

The fact that it did veer so much towards dark territory is why they made it so obvious which Pinkie was the original; there shouldn't be a shadow of a doubt that the original Pinkie Pie is safe and sound. I love how the script utilizes the fact that there's more to Pinkie Pie than zaniness as the lynchpin to the plot. :)

That was an excellent episode. Good story, good-to-great jokes, pretty cool animation (I'm looking at you, mirror pond), good call-backs to earlier eps and good groundwork for future memes. I'm justing to for someone to edit "No I'm Spartacus" to the episode.

Btw, anyone else notice that they re-used a bunch of animations for Pinkie from previous episodes?

Nu11u5

The reuse of animation was pretty noticeable, but not unexpected considering the amount of work it would have been otherwise.

Finally got around to watching. I think I can safely lay my fears to rest that the S3 opener was going to set the tone for the season. That was excellent.

Between this ep and the S2 season finale, I'm surprised Twi hasn't come up with a genuine mane six verification spell. Which actually makes me wonder...could one of the pinkie clones use the elements of harmony?

Also amusing, apparently unicorn horn can withstand (And generate!) temperatures of 600C or so, judging by Twi's horn glowing red hot after all the zapping.

So if the incantation is "doubly mared", does that mean the pool wouldn't work on stallions? :p

Nu11u5
November 19 2012, 05:56:35 AM
The assumption then is the incantation is necessary, and that there isn't a variation that works on males.

I like the creapy implication of the first scene where a duplicate is actually you from another world/dimension who entered the pool and emerged on your side.

Another Fridge Horror moment I just had:
The copied pinkies were all pretty much defined by their need for fun, to the exception of anything else. Was that because that was the overriding need on (orig)pinkies mind when she created them (and on their minds when they created later incarnations)? If so, that gives the rhymes line "and promise not to be scared" a whole new side of horror - you could create a being that has nothing but fear as her overarching state of mind.
That episode has a score of those fridge horror moments if you overanalyse it.

My Fridge logic:

Back when return of harmony was on I saw a theory that Twi did not restored her friends back to what they were but restored them to what she thought they were:
Pinkie instead of being clever in a weird way (Parasprites, "it as under E", etc.. ) became plain silly (2nd season pinkie).
Rarity instead lady like but genuinely good at hart (I'll make dresses for everyone, etc...) became a bitch (taking Spike's Rudy, Sweet and elite, etc...)
With the other mares ether twilight got right or I don't remember good examples, basically the theory argues that Twi restored the mere6 to the stereotypes she had of them
I would go as Farther as saying that the Elements of Harmony restored Luna not to her true personality but to Twilight's idyllic image of an Innocent Princess exiled to the Moon (1st Season Luna) and it took almost and entire season for Tia to get Luna right (Luna Eclipsed) and I say Luna was only fully restored in Crystal Empire

Well I was thinking; considering that the Pinkie's copies could be anything from constructs based on various sides of her personality or plain simple soulless copies, I take the first one. I Say that the pinkie remaining in the room after the others were cast back wasn't the "Real Pinkie" but rather the personality construct made from what was Pinkie's personality before the Memory Spell restored/changed her. Finally restoring her to her true self. I hope to see a more clever Pinkie Pie from now on.

More than that: Was Fancy Pants visiting Rarity in Ponyville? Is Tank still RD's pet of she gave him back to Fluttershy when she got bored (He is not seen with RD but rather with the other critters and FShy). This is quite obvious for everyone: the "Send Back to the pond" spell basically kills the copies...
