In re: Haruhi, nothing will be able to replicate the joy of watching the internet's response to :niceboat: and the Endless Eight for the first time. Not to mention the goosebumps you get watching episode 12 - genuinely chuffing marvelous animation there. If you enjoy anime on just about any level you'll enjoy this show.
Powered through Elfen Lied last night. I get what they were trying to do. It's just too awkwardly written to really have the impact they were aiming for.

Ironically, you see the level of art detail you have in Ghost In The Shell films and Avatar TLA, and CGI on Matricx level. All in one prototype package...
Battle Royale was a book, that became an anime and manga...so anime can be spawned from any medium.
I've already disproven the concept of anime even being native to Japan as it was military propaganda by the US, that during Japanese Occupation, was exposed to Japanese civilian animators.

Yes, we don't know anything, "Just As Planned", hahaha.
So yeah, we're probably not getting anything but Endless Eight this season.
Congrats, KyoAni, you've just lost another fan.
Now where the HELL is that tenth novel? Oh wait, that'll probably be a troll too.

Definition pulled from Weabo's Dictionary perhaps? :obama:
"Anime (アニメ?, Japanese pronunciation: [anime] ( listen); English pronunciation: /ˈænɨmeɪ/ ( listen)) is the Japanese abbreviated pronunciation of "animation"[moving picture produced by framed photography, bro]. The definition sometimes changes depending on the context.[1] In English-speaking countries, the term most commonly refers to Japanese animated cartoons.[weabos, bro][2]
While the earliest known Japanese animation dates to 1917, and many original Japanese cartoons were produced in the ensuing decades, the characteristic anime style developed in the 1960s[post-Occupation bro, copied Betty Boop also, bro]—notably with the work of Osamu Tezuka—and became known outside Japan in the 1980s.
Anime, like manga, has a large audience in Japan and recognition throughout the world. Distributors can release anime via television broadcasts, directly to video, or theatrically, as well as online.
Both hand-drawn and computer-animated anime exist.[CGI, bro] It is used in television series, films, video, video games, commercials, and internet-based releases, and represents most, if not all, genres of fiction. As the market for anime increased in Japan, it also gained popularity in East and Southeast Asia. Anime is currently popular in many different regions around the world.[citation needed]"
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Anime
I researched all that in highschool, out of simple curiosity, without using wikipedia...you grabbed the first thing off Google search, WITHOUT even delving into the cultural/political or historical origins.
And you refuse to acknowledge that the medium is evolving/stagnating before your very eyes.
Next you'll tell me hentai refers to porn. :psyduck:

Endless Eight was a big failure in direction, even in quality. But it was fun to watch during the broadcast; one cannot get tired of the cast in swimsuits and Asahina's tears. Once a week, though. And once in a lifetime. The movie somewhat made up for that compulsion retardness, or at least avoided the death of the Haruhi franchise.

I always thought it was called anime as the japanese dialect cannot handle saying animation.
That is the point I have been trying to make for 3 pages...
The Japanese, who 'own the word/product', culturally, did not want to own the word/product...it's like saying hotdogs only come from America[due to our invention of the first 'footlong'/:lolobesity: due to them]
So he/weabos wants to exclude, ancient forms of animation, evolving Western modern forms[generic-stylized cartoons], and evolving ASIAN forms[Koreans and soon even China]. From an animation thread. For discussing animation, of which Japanese is included.
I should post a Ren & Stimpy review. The few eps of that contain more crazy and [I]film noir than some of the flat, hyper-sugar bullshit being spewed from Japan.

Now just in case you didn't know we speak english here, so the title of this thread means "The Japanese animated cartoons thread" as is also explained in the OP. If you wish to discuss other various kinds of animation I suggest that you create an animation thread in which to discuss them as this thread of for the discussion of Japanese animated cartoons not animation in general. If you don't want to do that then I suggest you watch this installment of the "[verb]ing with Hinako" series:

PMMM is probably the best thing this year in my opinion, maybe even in the last couple of years. Watching it while it was airing was one hell of a ride. The blurays are coming out at the moment, will have to rewatch when they're all out. SHAFT always makes huge improvements to the animation and backgrounds on their BDs.
Umineko no Naku Koro ni
Was pretty bad. It adapts half of a novel and sold badly so seeing the other half animated is pretty unlikely, so unless you actually go read the novel you're not going to get any kind of ending. It was also released before the end of the novel was out, so they had to adapt it while having no idea what was going to be important, how it was going to end and it's a bit incoherent. The animation is pretty bad and the pacing is all over the place, it's DEEN at their worst. The best thing to come out of it was the OP and ED music.
That said, the novel is fucking brilliant.

Tip 1) Watch Simoun, it's cool.
Tip 2) Do not watch episodes 23-26
Tip 3) Whoever wrote the ending needs to be shot in the face until dead.
Bad ending is bad.

The ending is bittersweet, but it's not bad
The point is that while the Theocracy signs a peace agreement that breaks them up and disbands the Sibyllae, the remaining Sybyllae gamble it all to have Aaeru and Neviril escape and perform the perfect Emerald Rii Maajon, which makes them transcend time and space (hmm, Tempus and Spatium you say...). The Theocracy was never going to win the war anyway - trained soldiers in war machines vs. conscripted priestesses in ceremonial flying vehicles... and massively outnumbered and outproduced... yeah.
You can read it as a classic growing-up tale, with Aaeru and Neviril standing eternal testament to that time in their lives and the friendships and closeness that they had. Everyone chooses their path and goes their separate ways, but they all remember that time in their hearts. If you're Lusulpher you can read it as a retelling of the Japanese in WWII or.. something. I hated it right after it ended, but it grew on me.
Also, Kaiba: brilliant through 7 episodes, some of the most moving and depressing anime I've ever seen (seriously almost cried a couple of times) but then sacrifices that awesomeness and world-building to the necessities of plot. Pity too, the main plot is pretty incoherent both structurally and thematically. You know who the villain is going to be by episode 7 and the rest of the plot is an exercise in dot-connecting. But holy fuck is it fantastic and surreal and beautiful while it lasts, and massively overlooked. Great electronic soundtrack too. Grade: ++
http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ZKDETYq6J1I
Also, Denpa Teki na Kanojo. Characterized by Baka-Raptor as "Kure-nai minus the bullshit." I don't know since I haven't seen Kure-nai. I do know that this was easily the most riveting OVA I've seen yet. The plot moves forward relentlessly.
A schoolgirl pledges her fealty to a schoolboy, saying he was a king in a past life? OK.
Wait, people are being murdered left and right, and we have to find out the killer? Alright.
What's that? Epic psycho schoolgirl murderer knife showdowns? Random rape and murder flashbacks? People losing their sanity left and right? Ohh shit.
Seriously, this OVA has more psychotic characters than any other anime I've ever seen. And it fucking works - you can't stop watching, cause you never know when someone's going to burst through a window and try to stab you in the neck. Another criminally overlooked series. Grade: +++

Huh... I loved the ending. The Theocracy was obviously losing the war for most of the second half of the show so that was hardly a last-minute twist, it tied up all the romantic threads nicely, and the stable time loop thing actually kind of made sense, which is more than can often be said of anime time travel.

not trolling, sol bianca is actually shit. shit characters, dissimilar settings and tone (space opera vs. gritty space western), and sol bianca completely lacks the style and thematic undertones of cowboy bebop. Tons of meaningless action and pretty explosions. It's less "good anime" and more "shit 80s cartoon". you really have something special when a 2-episode OVA is getting me bored enough to consider dropping it halfway through. not trolling, sol bianca is actually shit. shit characters, dissimilar settings and tone (space opera vs. gritty space western), and sol bianca completely lacks the style and thematic undertones of cowboy bebop. Tons of meaningless action and pretty explosions. It's less "good anime" and more "shit 80s cartoon". you really have something special when a 2-episode OVA is getting me bored enough to consider dropping it halfway through. The remake looks better, at least.
-Characters are closer to Ghost In The Shell level. Realistic designs[not this flat/dis-proportioned garbage they pump out] They have enough intrigue to warrant episodes for backstories.[kills me they never did it OVA by OVA!]
-The settings are closer to the range found in Ender's Game/Dune. Space Western can be found in Cowboy bebop AND the overrated Firefly...nobody complained... Not to mention each of those world's is almost a character by their colonial politics/social structure alone.
-Action is episodic just like Bebop...and it's damn cool action at that, completely blending the tech, spaceships with the fanservice[even though they held off on fanservice to validate their coolness]
-The remake is closer to modern anime and loses some of it's 'heft'. But they did retain the art references and somber detailings of what makes a group of pirates/anachists.[yes, the original is female-oriented Anarchy, notice how the women never settle down/try to save anyone, or expand the crew?]
-About pirates, they were a historically a crew that mutinied while at sea and them made democratic decisisions as to where to make their living next. So Sol Bianca is much more accurate a portrayal of piracy than say, Pirates of the Caribbean[corny shitfest, but Johnny Depp has to feed his bitches too].
Walking the plank/hanging were the brutal measures of the official Navies, much like in Sol Bianca.
if you want shit 80's cartoon, that actually matches your review, try the Transformers Movie...Sol Bianca picked up all the good parts of Gall Force Saga and evolved them towards Cowboy Bebop. Legitimate PsyFi anime.
tl;dr: No offense, but it's you, bro.

i'm kind of of two minds about the whole thing... on the one hand, awesome visual style (except for the barriers), very stylistic, very cool, and a well-done plot. on the other hand, didn't really like madoka (the character) until the last couple of episodes, mami doesn't get nearly enough screen time for how awesome she is, and I really wanted to see someone blast Kyubey for good. Depressing as fuck (which always tends to come off as contrived to me), but a very fulfilling satisfying sort of ending. I guess it gets +++? Might knock it down to ++ (so from "masterpiece" to "awesome"). I dunno, I feel bad knocking it but parts of it just didn't click with me.
I seriously expected Madoka to choose to be a magical girl and bring back Mami with her wish. No idea how she avoided becoming one for so long.

So what is this show actually about?
It's about a mad scientist on a mission to prevent a future dystopian world government being formed by CERN (yes the science agency) by using the LHC to travel through time.
It has absolutely delightful dialogue, funny and interesting characters, and once you're into it a genuinely not rage-inducing story about time travel which almost never happens. This and Tiger and Bunny are my top non-moeshit shows this season.

Takes your typical 4-koma girl ensemble setup (a la Azumanga etc) and actually makes it fresh with funny jokes, comical victimization, and yuri. Pretty good and entertaining. Also lampshades the fact that these shows often have boring main characters. Kyoko doing her best Satou Sei impression:

Steins;Gate ep 21
Hmm, emotion-heavy episode, but light on actual plot. My general boredom with Mayuri was tempered by that nice speech she gave at her grandmother's grave.
I was hoping to see more reaction from Kurisu at the revelation that she will have to die to switch the worldlines. That reveal came off kinda bland, I like Okabe x Kurisu so I was hoping for more emotions out of those two. Also lol @ how psgels keeps comparing this to a harem anime, of all things.
Rewatched the first episode recently, so if I had to guess how this will end... Haven't played the visual novel, but I'm a good guesser:Okabe has to go back in time and kill Kurisu, and he cries out in anguish as he does so. Hence the scream we hear in episode 1 is his scream. I don't know how the plot would make this necessary, but it could be quite well done.
Maybe Okabe undoes the first D-mail, but Kurisu doesn't die. Okabe is glad, then realizes the divergence meter is still below 1%, meaning they're still headed for dystopia. He realizes that he has to be the one to kill Kurisu to get the divergence meter above 1%. He angsts about it and finally does it. DOWNER ENDING. Or, maybe if we're lucky, happy ending via deus ex machina.
Sidenote: Undoing the first D-mail means that Kurisu and Okabe will never develop the relationship they have over the course of the series. And if you remember the first episode, Kurisu says that Okabe had been trying to tell her something, but she didn't know what. That means he never gets to tell her how he feels. How sad ;_;

Probably different sources, but really MPC is just better at everything compared to VLC, (except for streaming media directly which is what VLC was made for, but streaming is also bad) so there isn't any reason to use it over MPC unless you have a thing for choppier animation, tinnier audio and pinky-grey smokeovision.

Pirates used democracy to determine navigation of the vessel. It could literally come down to a vote about which island/port to maroon officers/rape/pillage.[History Channel]
Privateers commit piracy, on mercenary contract...no voting...

Simoun is awesome. Admittedly started watching it just because of yuri (who needs another reason anyway amirite) but the plot kept me interested as well. I liked how it was not completely obvious from the start how things were gonna go (like in some animes), and also some of the plottwists were very cool. Ending was a bit vague though, would have liked to see what the 2 would have changed and how it affected the rest.

0083 Gundam: Stardust Memory[WAAAAYYYY better without commercials! Near perfect without that 'love twist'. Serious contender for top ten best Mecha OVAs]
Wicked City[pretty cool, noir-ish, hentai, demon slaying, refreshing directness]
Escape from New York[not an anime, just had a craving to finally watch it, was boss, y they give Micheal Gay money, and not J. Carpenter??]
Tokyo Magnitude 8.0[so detailed it becomes "survival ecchi", has lots of mannerisms from my family, EVEN CREEPIER, better have some disturbing tragedy at the end!]
http://myanimelist.net/animelist/Lusulpher
Also, Boondocks is by MadHouse Studios so should count. And it is 'dope to def, yo!'
Update: VLC uses 1% more CPU, 3-4 versus 4-5[might affect laptop/Linux users]
MPC does not tell me how fast I am fast-forwarding through hentai...but I do approve of the gerbil sound. :D
MPC does have the better renderer, but so slightly better that if you stop looking for the haze, you notice they both don't have some futuristic, anti-aliasing feature for 27" monitors/lowres downloads. :(

I pretty much know 90% of everything in the lists, but great swathes of them I have simply decided to not watch. And only a fraction of what I have watched is present on the lists.

Basically what Krans said, a lot of what I watched wasnt on the list. Even so my numbers are pretty low. Need to :nolife: more I guess. On the other hand, some of what I watched was very long (One Piece, Dragonball, also I'm sad to say I watched a fair deal of Bleach), and some only show the first in a series (Black Lagoon, but not Second Barrage, Ghost in the Shell, but not second season, Code Geass, but not second season, etc.).

Perfect Blue is in 3 and 4 btw. I haven't seen it or much of Blue Gender which is what I was reminded of to start with. Paprika (same director as Perfect Blue) was worth what I paid iirc.
They also seem to have most of Studio Ghibli but no The Cat Returns? Oh noes. Also, Ninja Scrolls?!
I have all GitS seasons and films. The solid state society 3rd film's plot was weakest iirc. Please don't fuck up the live action film, Dreamsworks & Spielberg.

I can get behind Fate/stay night.
Non-terrible male lead (apart from occasional whiteknight tendencies)
Attractive female character designs
Bitchy yet hot tsundere character
Easy to follow yet interesting plot
A good selection of female archetypes (http://www.baka-raptor.com/Shana/wheel.JPG) (pussy-bitch, slut, pussy)

By the way I vote Tempus Spatium as the most badass deity ever. I mean some of the Greek and Norse gods got pretty close, but you have to give kudos to a guy who created the world in such a way that everyone under 17 is a girl and they have to make out with eachother to get stuff done. Respect.

quotan myself from pg 12:
SPOILERS
my fav theories I've read:
1. Aaeru and Neviril become Tempus and Spatium. They have done the Emerald Rii Maajon and could be said to exist at all points of space and time. The very last scene in the ballroom can point to this. (if I had to pick, Aaeru = Spatium - she's very concerned with where everyone is supposed to be, especially trying to get Neviril out of her room in the beginning :P . Neviril = Tempus - very affected by the flow of history and events, basically being sidelined by the events of Amuria's death.)
2. Amuria is Aaeru's grandfather. Think about it, Aaeru's grandfather is stated to have been the regina of Chor Dextra, and Amuria was caught in an Emerald Rii Maajon which could have sent her back in time, since her body disappeared. And though Amuria wasn't part of Chor Dextra before, maybe her appearance in the past is the entire reason the Simulacrum came to know about the effects of the Emerald Rii Maajon. If you've just created a new choir to investigate the Emerald Rii Maajon, who better to lead it than someone who's already done one? (This also explains why Neviril falls in love with Aaeru - same bloodline as Amuria! And, perhaps, why Aaeru is taken off flight duty once the identity of her grandfather becomes well known.)
3. I don't think Onashia is Dominura or Limone. First, she's stated to have been part of Chor Dextra, which rules out Limone... unless, like Amuria, we theorize that Limone was enlisted to take part in Chor Dextra when it was formed. More to the point, I don't think the narrative calls for it. Both Limone and Dominura seem happy and at ease, whereas Onashia is clearly haunted by her choices and angsty in general. I think she's just a sibylla who didn't want to let go of what she was. It seems to be a big theme.
4. Limone's knowledge of the word "aaeru" leads to a stable time loop, where she introduces the word to the ancient time, it survives up through the modern era, (Amuria hears it after traveling back in time herself?) and Aaeru is named after it.
Also, I really shouldn't like Fate/stay night as much as I do. But this is an awesome Visual Novel adaptation. Especially since I skipped half the lines in the prologue to the VN (then it crashed). I have this anime ranked ++ so far, at 12 eps out of 24. Depending on the second half that could certainly drop, but it's like Lays - bet you can't eat just one.
(I can also confirm this is a sweet anime to watch whilst drinking bourbon and eating potato "crisps". just fyi.)

I'm pretty sure I read somewhere (probably TVtropes) that there was some official evidence suggesting that Simoun is set in a Mortal Engines-esque post-apocalyptic world where the non-existence of men is a result of some catastrophe rather than by design. If that's true then Tempus Spatium and the Simouns are probably just sufficiently advanced technology.
Though that's arguably not as cool as a deity of lesbian makeouts.

That chart has Jin Roh in the correct place. :(
Ghibli films are level 1 or 0...
Not going to count series, numbers don't describe what I learned from each.
Tokyo Mag 8.0 is going to be another level 4. It feels gloomy, and the main character is an annoying bitch. That does not bode well for a good series.[found it in the lvl5 already :( with Beat Angel Escalayer?!...hentai is not obscure, not discussed, but certainly not obscure!]
Much of the sad/serious series are in the obscure pile. :(
http://tvtropes.org/pmwiki/pmwiki.php/Main/Cencoroll Oooh...
And found Casshern Sins...looks like Cyborg 009 redone properly[man I hated that show]
"The makers of the GANTZ anime knew they'd have to make a Gecko Ending from the very first episode, and subsequently started planting hooks that would eventually become significant in the final arc, which was completely made up, right from the beginning. It's actually quite impressive seeing characters who appeared in the background of some early scenes showing up as major characters for the final game.
And honestly, although the manga is better, the anime was very well done. Gonzo definitely learned from their errors with Hellsing (see below); all the unanswered questions in Gantz were things they couldn't have answered, because the manga hadn't done so yet either."
This site delivers! Finally, closure on GANTZ.
Also, MPC doesn't shatter the image at high speeds. That made me a convert.

The definition of obscure is bullshit, most of their level 5 series are hella easy to find. I'm talking weekly updates on crunchy roll and PSN, so not exactly a lot of effort to track down. It's like they picked shows at random and said "this is rare". And how did "Madoka" get rated as level 1? It's brand new, and wasn't exactly that big of a hit. Plus they have the same series listed in mulitiple categories...like some are rated as level 1, 2, and 5.
On the other hand, the only show I've watched this year is Natsume Yujincho. There's just not much left that interests, and my viewing time is pretty much limited to what I can catch on my ipad while on my rowng machine.
Umm, guess I know where 2006-2009 went. Had a lot a of free time after kicking a warcraft addiction but before returning to dating/ going outside.

No. Something like Sazae-san is a hit. Madoka is just more Shimbo fap fodder for the pedo crowd. I'm sure it was very popular with them, but six months from now? I just don't think I would consider it to be something that's widespread or longlasting, especially compared to the other shows and movies in the level one category.

You can get them all for free...if you know where to look. I liked the Fate/Stay Night anime a lot for some reason...liked the VN too, had some appropiately creepy scenes, even if it didn't have voiceovers (that might only be the original version though, I think the playstation version does). I have a hard time getting into visual novels though, I think the only one I've played through all the way was Tears to Tiara.

I thought Madoka was fantastic, and I hardly consider myself part of the pedo/moe crowd. Also I've never seen Sazae-san. Will try Parallels.

Sure, and compared to the Simpsons, Evangelion was a tiny drop in the ocean... you can't compare Sazae-san to late-night anime. And Madoka outsold nearly everything in that category in the last ten years. Haruhi is a "level 1" with an established novel franchise behind it and even then I'm pretty sure Madoka beat it quite thoroughly on sales.

At the time it aired, and months later when the BDs came out it was still massively popular, BD's sold (IIRC) 22,000 units on the first day? Now I won't argue that a few year's from now it won't necessarily have long-lasting appeal, but it's certainly bigger than 'mere pedo crap'. Being eclipsed by a time travel show that followed immediately after probably didn't help Madoka very much though...
