Word coming from the pre-screening of the first two episodes is a little... worrisome. The show in general is considered to be excellent, but there are some concerns that they may be panning some of the darker bits of the LN... Death and all that. Haven't seen it myself, so I'll wait to judge when it actually airs. Sounds like the first ep was overall excellent, the second episode that was aired at the Paris pre-screen was a whopping 10 minutes long, and was very unfinished... so that likely reflects on some of the tone complaints from ep two.

Really fired up over the new PV though ^_^

Nothing much to say... I'm woefully behind on SOOOOO much of the current season o' anime that talking about episodes from 4 weeks ago feels silly. Although I did watch the end of Fate / Zero (which was great), and Aquarion EVOL (which was not). Hoping to catch up next week before the new stuff starts.

Sword Art Online (SAO, hereafter) is an MMORPG. Have you ever played an MMORPG yourself, Director Ito?

I have. I thought about trying to role-play Kirito, so I just stoically leveled on my own, though (smile). There are several hundreds of people connected to it in real time, and I found it mysterious how people you met there would talk to you, even if they never knew you before. Also, there was one time where I found myself in a pinch during battle and this male character slipped me a healing item. I thought that was cool of him, but I have no idea who old or what gender the player actually was. It was fun to find myself trying to imagine what those people were like in their real lives. I'm also glad I was able to experience the descriptions and sensations of an MMORPG that come up in the original work. I'd like to make good use of that in the anime as well.

Then, how do you play to portray the appearance of an MMORPG world in anime?

Fantasy settings go very well with anime in the first place, so I wanted to convey that well first, and then try to add the sense that this is a game. Though I also worried that if we only depicted the virtual world, then it would seem like a regular fantasy anime. If it seems like some distant, unrelated world, it might be hard for viewers to empathize. So I thought that if we depicted it as an extension of the real world, and showed the real lives and troubles of the individual characters, it would give it even more depth.

With that in mind then, what kind of image did you have for the setting of this story, the world of Aincrad?

The first one I had at the beginning was a vague, “how about the ruins of South America?” Medieval Europe is a very common idea when dealing with fantasy, but I thought we could stray from that a bit and give it a different charm. It was less, “We should use South America!” and more, “Let's use a location that others aren't using much.” I've been there before on a personal trip, so I also thought we could make use of the pictures I took then and earn back some of the travel expenses (smile). Obviously that's not the entire image for it, and there are several West European locations that naturally appear as well.

How was the original author, Kawahara-sensei involved with the anime?

First of all, he joined us for nearly every one of our script meetings. There were times he couldn't attend due to a cold, but otherwise he joined us for all of them. He did more than just answer our questions for his opinion, and we were very grateful for the way he joined us as a member of script development. He also decided on a lot of things that hadn't appeared in the original work, like town names, for us, and giving us detailed explanations of Kirito's equipment stats. He even had names for each of the default equipment Kirito wore when he first logged in to the virtual world (smile). We were also happy that Kawahara-san took the initiative to tell us all these things.

Tell us a little bit about the characters. First, what was your impression of Kirito?

I was jealous of Kirito. To be frank, I was jealous that he's strong and popular with women (smile). But, while he knows that he has to escape from the virtual world, Aincrad, he also feels more at home in that virtual world than in reality. I'm sure there are a lot of people who share that feeling in his world, but perhaps Kirito is their representative.

Then what about the heroine, Asuna?

Asuna is a good woman. Even at our stage event during Anime Contents Expo, I said “Asuna is a good woman” in front of (Haruka) Tomatsu-san, who plays her character (smile.) She's basically the perfect woman, isn't she? She's kind, beautiful, she's a good cook, and loved by her peers. It's usually hard to approach such perfect characters, but I grew attached to her as I drew the storyboards. Surprisingly, she has her faults too. When I was convinced that Asuna was cute, I felt that many would enjoy this anime.

What were your impressions of Yoshitsugu Matsuoka-san and Haruka Tomatsu-san, who play the roles of Kirito and Asuna?

While Kirito is introverted and naïve, he can take charge when he decides to, yet we also wanted to avoid having his voice sound too manly or masculine. Amongst all the people who auditioned for the role, Matsuoka-san fit our image the best. When we heard Tomatsu-san at the audition, not only did fit the character, she was very good. I doubt there are many actresses her age who can match her level of skill. Matsuoka-san and Tomatsu-san both give us nothing to worry about, and I can't wait until off-recording begins.

Speaking of Anime Contents Expo, you all actually made Elucidator (Kirito's sword) and displayed it?

It's convenient to have a sword on hand as reference for the animation, so we originally planned to buy a cheap one. Elucidator is a little long for a one-handed sword, but we wanted to know what it was like to swing such a sword, and how it would move. Then our producer, Kashiwada-san, said, “Then why don't we make the real thing?” And he even talked about making Asuna's Lambentright in addition to Kirito's Elucidator. When we don't have events, all our animation staff uses them to practice their sword skills (smile).

Kawahara-sensei's other original work, Accel World, was animated before SAO. Did you pay any mind to that fact?

Paying it too much mind wouldn't do any good so we just focused all of our efforts on SAO without giving it much attention. Rather than pay it mind, I'd prefer to send them a cheer of “Let's both make them fun together!”

Lastly, would you please tell us what you've felt so far as production made its way to its present state?

We have animators I can trust, a highly skilled action animation director, and I felt really blessed to have the team we do. Especially with our art staff. The anime has several different worlds in its setting, so we had to ask them for a lot of material. But that's something the work demands, and there'd be no point to the anime if we didn't take good care of that. We asked the impossible more than usual, but our art directors from Bamboo answered our expectations and their quality is wonderful. When the art for our PV was done, I could truly feel the progress we'd made. This is a work with people who have been fans since the light novels, and those who became fans when the website went up, so we're under a lot of pressure to try and meet all of their expectations. But we will do our best to respect the original work, so we hope that everyone will watch the animation when it's done, and enjoy our hard work.

From what I saw of the manga it'll feature gratuitous levels of tonk on tonk combat instead of just cute girls doing cute things + a tank so it looks to be less pure moeshit than first appearances would imply.

Watch the TV show then watch End of Evangelion. Pretty much everything else is optional. Rebuild is often recommended as a starting point, and it is pretty good, but it's more aimed at existing fans IMO, and it's a new story rather than a retelling.

Several people did mention it including the soundtrack, few listened though. :(

If you have not seen it yet I'd recommend Tsukihime* as it was created by the same writer as Kara no Kyoukai and Fate/Zero.

Also if you have not seen it the Fate/stay night: Unlimited Blade Works movie was enjoyable.

Pretty much I attempt to watch anything Yuki Kajiura composed the soundtrack for; at the very least I can enjoy the music.

I've got the raw queued up for watching sometime. I'm assuming no one's going to touch the fan translation / subbing... because no one translates anything anymore, and translating something as language based as THIS show would be a ton of work.

Excellent first ep. Love the OP animation, as expected the OP music is good, if a bit generic. Unsure if the early pre-air reports of ep two will remain an issue or not (most likely not, the pre-air viewers were told there would still be heavy modifications), but at least the first ep did a really solid job.

Next ep 'Beater', delves into the side story 'Aria in the Starless Night' so I'm curious how they handle the adaption. It'll also see the intro of Asuna, so I'm curious how our Heroine works out in the anime.

Unfortunately they're skipping the side story 'First Day', but things happen in adaptions... w/e. Adaption wise it feels like they took the first chunk of the LN and adapted it exactly. There won't be many surprises for LN readers, but there won't be any massive disappointments either.

Everything else aside though it's a good story, they do a good job in the first EP and you can feel the mood shifting as the episode progresses.

Confirming a few things:

- Toori can be naked ALLLLL~ season long if we get this sorta reaction out of it. Also, he generates his own magical mosiac... why put on clothes?

- Bonus points for Kimi NOT putting her clothes back on.

- Extra bonus points for Kimi taking OTHER characters's clothes off.

- Awesome shows are awesome, even if you don't know what the hell is going on.

I'm actually quite impressed with the tissue jokes as well... the translations were probably not very literal, but since the humor would probably be missed unless you're a native Japanese speaker at least it gives us some dialog to laugh at while enjoying the pretty girls. Yeah none of the word sound alike translations were literal. They picked words that were similar in English. Like the delicacy and delivery. The Japanese translates (aisatsu) greetings instead of delicacy for instance. But the joke wouldn't have made much sense if they had gone with greetings -> delivery lol.

Watch the OVA's first. They were released after S2, but they bridge the gap between S1 and S2. You don't necessarily have to watch all of 'em, but the first one is worthwhile if just to see our MC from S1 again... and the fight was a lot of fun. S2... I enjoyed to a point. But again, it depends on how you like the new MC.

Hei is still the main character, he just loses his powers - which were never that important to him in the first place, he was a badass before he got them. It's like any of the short arcs from the first season, the focus is on Suou and various side characters but Hei is still there and kicking ass.

Being completely objective (I...for some reason, enjoyed the LN) SAO is pretty much the biggest gary stu x mary sue I've seen for a while, it's not particularly interesting, and the writing/story/dialogue is pretty shit 90% of the time... however, the setting is fairly unique (at least in the anime world (lol wait no it's not) and the characters are realistic and emotional (lol wait no they're not)

The health/SP bars won't properly update if their being held at a given value, but it still works fine internally. The Damage of Next Attack works as expected; if you use it to obliterate a scripted battle, it continues as normal (haven't tried it on the forced losses tho ...)

Don't watch the last 2 episodes, they never happened.

I'll certainly be the first to admit to possibly being blinded to the bad points of the series. I'm a fan of the franchise after all.

(it's worth pointing out that the second ep of SAO and Campione! have some really seriously glaring pacing issues. Serious ones. Although, to be fair both have some subtle references that go well with the 'show, don't tell' motif. Both shows seem hell-bent on sacrificing depth for the cool factor. Sort of expected in an adaption though).

Technically they had enough stupid filler shit to disprove that last statement as well. Honestly if the show had competent writer's it coulda been good. But alas.

It followed the rule of cool a little too often. Consistent characters? Character growth? Reasonable plot development? Folks doing things that make sense?

Ultimately though they had to keep reminding us our bad guys were evil, that our main protag was just a misunderstood guy, and that these things we were seeing were really cool, even if they made no damn sense. I liked elements of the show, but hated it overall ^_^;;

If you like the sort of "Lord of the Flies" style Sci-Fi I'd recommend Infinite Ryvius off of Beardponderer's image link.

When I watched Guilty Crown I kept thinking that it reminded me of Scryed (s-CRY-ed) with a few of the themes. I thought Scryed actually did much better job of it than Guilty Crown so you might want to check that out too.

I'm actually of the same mind, I was like "wait, a character with the nickname Railgun? ... tell me more".

Low-level spoilers below...

Overall, I'd give it a B+ to A- grade. Definitely good enough for a run-through, and further investigation of related series, but probably not one I'd buy (yet, I'm up to episode 17 or so).

Pro's:

- Misaka is a really enjoyable character, she has a nice blend of tsundere, controlled but very powerful capabilities that she's earned, and a tendency to be guided by logic rather than emotions or temper.

- The music is really good, to the point where the two openings and a few background music scores are stuck in my head, and have been for a week or two.*

- Has a nice discussion over the first arc about power, namely how power should be earned rather than cheating to get it, what one should do with that power, and how to treat others who differ than you.

- Has a nice mixture of episodes, something like 30% conflict-oriented, 60% backstory development or detective work, and 10% fanservice. I want more fighting episodes, but their frequency is right so that when I get one, I enjoy it, rather than say a Bleach where I'd go "oh, yet another combat episode". (I do like Bleach though :obama:)

Con's:

- Fan service at times can be a little over the top - nothing explicit, and thankfully contained to only a few characters, but I'd recommend this only to understanding and tolerant people who can deal with it. (A point of comparison might be High School of the Dead - this is about 20-30% of that level)

- Not having watched the main series Toaru Majutsu no Index, of which this series is a side-story of, I feel I miss out on understanding who some characters are, or the backstory they had built up before I encountered them. I'd say watch that series before this one, but as I haven't done so personally, I'm not sure what it's like.

I have read scryed, I enjoyed it but it also seemed extremely rushed. It seemed like it was halfway between a one shot and a proper series, very very short. It had a lot of potential as well though

As for Railgun, while Misaka is by far a better character than Index unfortunately her spin off series is not. Some of the backstory episodes are quite good, but most of the conflict ones feel entirely pointless, and it doesn't really fit in with the overarching plot from index, seeing as it's supposed to be happening in between s1 and s2 afaik. Also the teleport chick and her stupid antics, forget her name, annoys me to no end, and is a serious downer on the series for me, holy shit she is annoying. There is also far less character development in Railgun than there is in Index. If you enjoyed it though I highly recommend Index, despite Index herself being a rather bland and one dimensional character the story and the rest of the characters are excellent, and it also has really good character development for most of the characters (Except Index :V)

Also, while I'm agreeing it's not living up to it's hype, it's doing an absolutely amazing job of 'show, don't tell'.

Shit's subtle in that show, and folks not paying attention are likely going to miss a lot. After sleeping on the fiasco that was Ep2 I'm actually MORE impressed with how subtle some of the stuff is. Mad props to a show that doesn't drown you in pointless narration and just uses subtle clues.

(I remember when they announced the VN 'sequel' to S;G (set in the same world, not a true sequel)... then a short time later there were video's and stuff, but it got an anime release amazingly fast. Definitely looking forward to seeing what they do with it.

It sorta works like that. If you're not finding the characters and frills (fights and whatnot) fun just drop it now. The back story is pretty damn surprisingly deep, and the characters REALLY work well together, but you'll spend vast chunks of the show not really knowing what's going on.

Personally I think I'm only watching it because UTW's translating it... and it's so bad it's actually swapped around and became funny... sorta. unless we're supposed to seriously assume our MC harem protag's little sister could be his teacher in high school. Or that the older girl is his little sister. Ironically in the first four episodes he's trying to decide if people his age are his little sister... Ignoring all his younger classmates (who, apparently, also want into his pants).
