View Full Version : Weekend Trips all over Europe

Ok, here is the plan/idea. I have done this before, but it was when I was still a student and roughly 7 years ago by now. I booked the cheapest possible flights on consecutive weekends and spent 1-2 days sightseeing half a dozen cities in Europe.
I plan to do this again this year, but it seems a few of those supercheap airlines went bust meanwhile and all I can find is Ryanair who do a bunch of European fights. Anyone done something similar recently and can give suggestions on:
- what city
- what landmarks / places / events to check out
- what airline
- what accommodation (back then I was lolpoorstudentfag and crashed at hostels, this time motels/hotels)
I am in very early planning stages, but am googling for cool concerts that I wouldn't be able to see in Germany this year, some celebrations and events like running of the bulls, the tomatina festival etc.
Currently eyeing:
- Dublin (to beat up Spawinte, fuck 56k Lagman and give Buceph a hug)
- Barcelona
- Florence
- Paris
- London
- Prague
Most trips with Ryanair seem to cost up to €100 two-way direction. So with cheap accommodations it may be ~€200ish per weekend, which sounds ok. If this comes to fruition I shall post pictures of every trip and graffiti tag a Derek in every city I visit.

I did Lisbon last year, flight was €150 two way from Paris, can't remember airline tho. City is beautiful, lot of night life, cheap food/drink, many wominz. Sunny. Huge tek/trance/dnb festival nearby but I think it's in Brazil this year. I would advice against Paris unless you find something specific to do. Amsterdam is p. cool too but I guess you already know that.

If you go to Dublin I will try my hardest to make it up and buy you, Spawinte (and BV and Lagman if they sign up here) a pint.

Yuto, don't go to Moscow. Not only because weather is shit this year (still have snow in suburbs lolwat) but also because i'll find and rape you.
I heard RyanAir is awfully cheap in yurop.

+1 for barcelona
fantastic city, great food at little family style restaurants at literally every corner.
get a ticket for the hop on hop off city bus and just look at every thing that tickles your fancy along the route.
especially like the various gaudi places.
see barca play or just see the arena itself which is quite cool.
it sounds touristy and it is but you get to set your own pace.
great shopping too if you are traveling with lady friend.
also, tappas
edit: stayed here http://www.hotelconstanzabarcelona.com/ can highly recommend
flew easyjet from basel for dirt cheap but that might not be an option.

Don't worry Razor, Moscow is not an option. Got 3 Russians at work and they all said its not worth it.
Cheers mira! One question: do you speak Spanish or did you get by with English? My Spanish is almost non-existent and that was rather challenging in Argentina.

got by on english just fine.
well some of the restaurants were problematic but nothing you cant overcome with pointing and smiling and gesturing and knowing keywords like wine and beer.
the hotel i linked often has special offers if it is not yet high season.
we payed 150euro for 3 nights in a double. that was in january though.
odd enough we arrived on the start day of wintersales, sneaky woman!
scored me some nice pairs of campers though.
dont pay for breakfast at hotel and rather go to one of the local chain of coffeeshops for the best coffee and breakfast ever.

Amsterdam seems to be a popular place to visit as well. Being Dutch myself, I don't really like that city though... But I've heard a lot of people having lots of fun there, so might be worthwhile looking in to.
Also Rome, it's a beautiful city, one of the places I definitely want to go back to someday.
If you like walking through the mountains I can recommend the Swiss Alps. It's such an awesome place to just walk around and enjoy the environment, everything is so fresh and pure there.

Ideally she would come with, but I can't be a beta phaggot about it, so I am not redesigning my life entirely around her. If nothing comes of it or she can't/won't come with, I will still get my Cosmopolitan suave on, clappin dem international cheekz, fuck yea, motherfuckers!
Any other renaissance towns other than the usual suspects in Tuscany to look out for? Have done Rome, may do it again, it is indeed awesome DAN13L and re-visit-worthy.
Amsterdam I visited already 3-4 times (I used to live rather close to Venlo and as such trips to the Netherlands were common ... no, not for weed).

We went to Prague with friends on vacation last year. Prague itself is really nice, but close to it lies an even greater beauty, Velka Amerika (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Velk%C3%A1_Amerika) aka the Czech Grand Canyon. It's a beautiful place to see, and to swim in. You are officially not allowed to swim there and you have to climb down a fair bit but it's worth it! 8-)
It does take you a while to travel there by bus, so if you're there for only a weekend it might be a bit too time-consuming.

just dont bother with the tivoli. it is dirty, expensive and crap.

as i don't know what you're actually interested in (architecture, 'high culture', parties, etc.) just a general overview.
for one there's a shitload of museums to visit - starting with the naturhistorischem und kunsthistorischem museum at the ringstraße down to such obscurities like the faelschermuseum (http://www.faelschermuseum.com/) ... also there are usually quite a lot good temporary exhibitions.
for party and stuff there are several hotspots - e.g. donaukanal (esp. in summer) and gürtel lokale - as well as lots of smaller and bigger bars/cafés in the 6. and 7. district (museumsquartier included)
but i guess some of the other FHC fellows in vienna might give a few more (and better) tips :P

I really enjoyed Vienna. It's super easy to get around - even when punching further out - and there are heaps of things to have a look at.
I did lots of very classic shit though like museums and concerts, which might not be your thing.

I'll be in Lyon starting in late August. I'll be eurotripping October 21st-31st and possibly also December 15th-January 4th. Thus I will be stealing all of your awesome travel destination ideas and using them as my own MUAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAHA

Also fuuuuuuuuuuuuu Exo. :P WB, I'mma stalk you in Lyon, drug you and sell to a prostitution ring. Then your dad will ring your cell phone, sick of worrying because you haven't called in a while. And when I pick it up with my thick balkan rapist voice he'll be all like:
I don’t know who you are. I don’t know what you want. If you are looking for ransom, I can tell you I don’t have money. But what I do have are a very particular set of skills; skills I have acquired over a very long career. Skills that make me a nightmare for people like you. If you let my faggot son go now, that’ll be the end of it. I will not look for you, I will not pursue you. But if you don’t, I will look for you, I will find you, and I will kill you.
And I'll be all like

Barcelona.
I love Barcelona and I have only one advise. Stay the fuck away from the obvious touristy stuff. Because there are too many tourists there. Fuck La Rambla. Love the side streets.
Or pick one (Cathedral or maybe the park), camp outside and be first in.
Best thing I know is to just walk around, think of the different parts of town as several big attractions. :P
Also eat lots of jamon.
Exo: Why did you decide to start your euro-trip when the darkness and cold is basically back again? :(

]Exo: Why did you decide to start your euro-trip when the darkness and cold is basically back again? :(
It's really dictated by when I have break from uni classes =/. It seems that the last week or so in october is some sort of holiday in France, so I suspect that's why I'm free then. My last day of classes in France is December 15th-ish, and I don't start classes in China until early January, hence that break.
I'm considering going to France early (mid August) to do some traveling while it's nice, but I suspect I'll be able to get a bit of that in during my weekends in september?
Yuto: This wiki (http://wikitravel.org/en/Main_Page) is fantastic for general info on any sort of travel destination.

- Barcelona
A given really. Amazing city, cant go wrong.
Other then that i kind of like Berlin.
Places that Ryanair go that are worth visiting include:
Faro
Faro itself gets boring fast, but Olhao and a lot of other places nearby are worth 2-3 days also. And the flights are insanely cheap. Definitely worth going. And of course living and food is almost free. I strongly recommend a trip to an island nearby called "Culatra" or similar. Very nice for a day trip.
Brussels
Lots of cool festivals and parties, and of course its Belgium, so good beer is to be had. Although the awesome Balkan festival was last weekend :(
Rome
Place you need to see if you havent already.

how the fuck did you get the prices so high!?
I live in Slovenia Koper which is a few minutes from Trieste (the closest airport). The prices from there to london (two way) are bellow 30 euros. And from London you can go anywhere...

Bring your own government though.
Brussels in a tl;dr
*Manneken Pis (little peeing guy somewhere in a backalley in Brussels, usually surrounded by 50+ Japanese tourists armed with state-of-the-art cameras)
*Some boring museums (basicly look at paintings and statues and wonder wtf they are)
*Beer
*Chocolate
*Bitches (either stuck up and arrogant, or dumb as a cow... or both)
