Been flying the Myrmidon a lot lately, and I had an idea earlier.
I checked the DPS numbers, and for a max skilled Myrm its:
3x Ogre II = 285 DPS
2x Ogre II/2x Hammer II/1x Hobgob II = 315 DPS
So is 30 DPS worth the difference in HP? Or does having more drones they have to lock pay off more?
The extra survivability makes a lot of sense to me.... but what does SHC say?

full rack is better.
not only is the paper dps better, but you have better applied damage against hulls you wouldn't necessarily switch to all mediums for because of better tracking and you have some nominal amount of dps arriving sooner than it would otherwise. also, i really doubt that in practice anyone will ordinarily kill 2 mediums and a light faster than they would one heavy.

2 Meds are about equal to 1 heavy in terms of hp, so you get more dps AND the ehp of the light for free. Only downside is that the two more drones take more collective damage to smartbombs (5 targets vs 3).

Aside from smartbombs, more targets is better.
Also as mentioned you have more and better applied DPS from the light/med drones at an earlier stage.

That's mostly what I figured, makes sense. Cheers

Managed to get one of three accounts unbanned, and I've been training a new one.

The better question is 2xHvy + 2xMed + 1xLight (315 dps) vs 5xMed (238 dps).
How small does the target have to be for the latter to actually do more damage?

Also, Ogres are easier to hit than hammerheads/Hobgobs...

On a similar note for ships with 100m3 of bandwidth (ie: hype & nvex), 3x heavy and 2x med is the same as 4x heavy, and you get an extra 5m3 for EMERGENCY EC300 (or repair drone)

Ogres do almost full damage on tackled (webbed/scrammed) cruisers. However, if you are chasing nano'ers around, you are most likely best off with 5x Valkyries, since they can keep up with most cruiser (and above) sized ships, the possible exception being an overly speedfitted Cynabal. And for your anti-frigate needs, you should have 5 Warriors anyway.
So, in general, 5x mediums are never the drones of choice while brawling.

How small does the target have to be for the latter to actually do more damage? It's not really target size so much as it is target speed.
Ogre IIs -can- hit (as mentioned) a scram/web cruiser easily and for basically full damage, the question is whether Travel Time (or whether the ogre will catch the target at all)
One -might- be able to make an argument for 2x garde, 2x hammer, 1x hob, but that'd be a tough sell since if the fight moves much at all you're SOL.
