Been watching hours and hours of russian docus about this and other russian pilots, savants, etc. Gagarin was/is a hero for any ex-USSR country my grandparents still have memorabilia from that period.

this. the US would never have made it to the moon if we didn't think the Russians were on our heels.
soviet cosmonauts were waaaaaayyyyy more ballsy than their US counterparts. soviet space program was a deathtrap. US astronauts were at least partially certain they wouldn't DIAF.

'Twas getting a "Not available in your area" geo IP cock blocking bullshit message, so I plugged in a UK proxy server address, and now it says "This content doesn't seem to be working. Try again later." Quite ridiculous that I can't watch a documentary that includes the Challenger mission, one of my country's worst space exploration fuckups. I'll be keeping my eye out for a torrent, but I haven't found one yet.

Fantastic biography of Yuri Gagarin and the early soviet space program.
Would recommend if you are interested in early space travel.

Thanks for the recommendation on that - ordered it off of Amazon (go go Prime trial).
So, 50 years on since this event, and apart from standing on the Moon, sending satellites out of the solar system (good bye to the Voyagers), Hubble, Skylab/Mir/ISS, what have done?
What has made the masses sit up and go OOO? Pop Idol thats what. Nothing has really grabbed their attention, made them sit up and realise the space program is totally worth the costs, the risks and even the lives involved...
I suppose, I'm just space-emo today :)

It would probably be easier if there was still a space-race instead of the current uneasy and somewhat inefficient state of cooperation between Ru/EU/US. Maybe in the longterm this will change if the Chinese announce a Mars mission or something like that.

Every man who's label as a hero, stand on the shoulders or ashes of those who made it possible.
On the other hand, if you were given the choice of death by space shuttle fireball or headshot in some Moscow back alley, you need some balls to take the cool option.

The chinese needs to get in on the act yeah,
Although their history if discovery is building a fleet of ships hundreds of years before their time discovering australia and all the surrounding island chains then returning to China and deciding the rest of the world is subpar so why bother

Thanks, yeah, I had looked into that and saw some threads of people complaining it didn't work and others said it was full of the adware/spyware, so I didn't try it last night. I'll give it a spin on my Guinea Pig box.
