Probably already been discussed, but is hosting cost for shc/fhc actually around
70 quid a month? Or was that just cd failing to shop around for hosting? I wouldn't want this forum to properly die and would quite happily contribute to its running costs as long as its a community effort

The cost should have been nowhere near SEVENTY EXTORTIONATE POUNDS.

Last I heard, you were hosting this for free through your workplace or something, on free server capacity like the minecraft server. Is this still true? Do you just have it running on the same server? I seem to remember it having only slightly outdated dual xeons and roughly eleventy million jiggaquads of RAM.

Pretty much.
A /whois on the IP that SHC is/was hosted on shows it being hosted at a company whose site doesn't have any pricing info (gyron.net (http://www1.uk.gyron.net/), someone on IRC called the contact number "for more information" but only got the answering machine because it was past 5 pm on friday) but googling around showed (outdated with dates being given from being around 2008) cheapest offers of USD 250ish or so per month (dunno about the specs) (http://www.web-hosting-top.com/companies/gyron.net), though that's probably not the package CD got unless he used it to host something else on it as well and just split the cost.
Either way, we don't know the specs of the box and the details of what traffic, etc. is included, but paying 70 quid a month was way over the top of what was reasonably necessary, especially since CD never even remotely delivered on any of the stuff that was suggested in the donation drive threads like TS3 server, hosting a server for whatever FOTM game is played, killboard/video hosting for ganknights, etc. etc.
To be fair, he never comitted to any of the above, but he didn't even deliver on vB, which probably would have at least cut down on the required system specs as from what I've heard phpbb2 is notoriously inefficient and scales terribly...
For comparison, a hosting package that is most likely way oversized for a forum like SHC at a very reputable hoster here in .de (a mate in a sysop/network administration job swears by it and has multiple boxes with them): http://www.hetzner.de/hosting/produktma ... tmatrix-eq (http://www.hetzner.de/hosting/produktmatrix/rootserver-produktmatrix-eq)
The cheapest package in that product line for €50/mo has 8GB of RAM, a quad core CPU, more disk space than you'd ever need, semi-unlimited traffic (5000 GB/month after which you'd be reduced to 10MBit/s or pay for more 100MBit/s at €7 per additional terabyte).
Granted, 150€ setup cost up front, but in the long run still probably very much oversized hosting for a internet spaceships forum with a few hundred max concurrent users tops for a converted 45 pound a month (curse you, weak GPB) and I dare claim that if you went shopping around for a cheaper, still reasonably reputable hoster you could cut the cost down further.

Tbh that sounds massive overkill bandwidth wise, the box sounds about right though, surely its the bandwidth you pay most for though with hosting?

I'd assume it hosted the badkarma forums and vent as well, but thats like .01% of SHC's traffic.

the trackmania server was a different donation drive altogether. That was the "first" one in which it was more of a brainfart after Trackmania because a far bigger fotm than expected within SHC (like, we were completely filling up public servers with people entirely from SHC alone, per night) and the guy who owned the public we used got pissy (he was a cock anyway) and started banning us from it. So we all decided to chip in and raise enough for our own Trackmania server which ended up collecting far more than intended (roughly around £350) which ended up going towards a top-spec custom box from multiplay, and it ended up hosting other shit as well (like CDs teamspeak, other fotm games etc) until fotm changed and interested died down. he eventually just stopped paying for that.
his trackmania SHC track was incredibly shitty anyway.

Firefox is based off of Netscape code.
Edit: hurr derp, misread that. They released some later stuff based off of firefox. So I guess it was a Netscape circle jerk.

SHC was hosted at clustered.net (http://clustered.net/vps.php) (and hostireland.com (http://stresa.hostireland.com/) before that).
I've no idea why CD opted for a) a UK host (they're fucking expensive compared with US), b) a £70/m package (the lowest end would have sufficed) or c) a host at all since several trustworthy SHC'rs have spare space on more powerful servers. Investing time into optimising the web and DB servers can also substantially reduce the resources they need to run, saving more money.
Big forums suck up CPU and RAM. Failheap might get kicked from shared hosting if someone notices (it appears to be on justhost.com (http://justhost.com/) at the moment). Just back up the DB regularly. ;)
