View Full Version : Serenity Information Compilation

Minion
June 11 2011, 08:33:03 PM
This is a compilation of all the existing information related to playing on Serenity, which has begun to sprawl. A lot of this is based on the good work of others, so many thanks to them and (inline) linkage to original threads where possible. Let me know if there is anything to add or fix and I will get to it.

Context - Game Version
Serenity still runs on Tyrannis (http://www.eveonline.com/updates/patchnotes.asp?patchlogID=213). Their expansion deployments can lag considerably behind TQ's and apparently tend to jump ahead rather than taking each expansion one at a time (Dominion was skipped entirely, for example). There is a rumor that Serenity will be updated sometime late in the year, but for now this means enduring learning skills, the old keybinding system, no rocket or T2 ammo changes, etc.

Positives:
Free Cerebral Accelerator (http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Cerebral_Accelerator) for all trials! Get it from Redeem Items before you log in.
100% training speed bonus for the first 1.6m SP.
Trials get 1 free destroyer and 4 free frigates of their race after their first downtime.
Subscribers get 80m ISK as seed money (http://translate.google.com/translate?&u=http%3A%2F%2Fwww.eve-online.com.cn%2Fhtmlfiles%2F2011-07%2F2011070100003554.htm) upon subscribing (July 1 through July 31). It pales in comparison to 1b ISK for ~8.7 USD (http://failheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1925), but even more money is good and it will help out those who won't/can't/are skeptical about dumping real money into ISK.
Going back in time.

Negatives:
Learning Skills.
No API, meaning no EVEMon or other API tools.
No EVE Voice for fleets with random people.
Weak obscenity filter that replaces unwanted phrases with *. Sometimes conflicts with normal English words.

Other Notes:
Serenity EVE Time is localized for China rather than UTC/GMT. Don't let it trick you.
Context - Environment
Socially, we have to keep in mind that Serenity is largely populated by people with a different culture, government, etc. Do not forget that China is the only country in the world that has its own EVE server, due especially to the way their business laws work. Your actions reflect on us as a whole, and that what may be fine to us might not be interpreted the same way by them (http://failheap-challenge.com/showthread.php?1814-Don-t-fuck-it-up-for-everyone-us-and-them-behave). It has been stated many times by local Serenity players that people will tend to be nice until you wrong them. It would be wise to avoid real-world political discussions/comments and other obviously touchy topics, lest their GMs intervene.

Politically, the map is divided up (http://go-dl3.eve-files.com/media/corp/VeriteChina/CinfluenceTranslated.png) by a few huge factions. Our arrival is very high profile on their forums, with some people thinking it great and others not so much. [2011.06.18] We have since learned that they generally dislike combat for the sake of it. Most wars are apparently fought on the forums, with relatively few making it to an actual battlefield. Many are interested in keeping relative peace, especially as related to sovereignty.

Militarily, Serenity apparently does not use killboards, so looking up entity histories is not yet possible. boatviolence saves the day again with a killboard (http://ceve.killboard.nl/) that can take both English and Chinese killmails, but we need to populate it. Despite this, the word is there are a lot of RRBS fleets in use, as well as that many people use meta 0 items due to the atrophied economy. Reports are coming in of comfortable locals rolling through low sec in T2 and faction battleships, even several instances of ratting in carriers.

Economically, items cost more than on TQ and there is considerably less supply of everything. Selling a 30d GTC here will net approximately 1b ISK, and that combined with RMT and the lower population makes for a strange buyer's market. The good news is we can sell items on the same scale, so money should not be too hard for the non-RMT player as long as you actually sell stuff instead of relying solely on bounties. Looking at the market right now, there are many good opportunities, including some that have not yet been nerfed like on TQ. [2011.06.18] Many of the manufactured goods on the market are marked up quite a bit from input price. In-house production is very valuable here, regardless of GTC prices.

Getting Started - Obtaining the Client
Original Thread (http://failheap-challenge.com/showthread.php?1785-FAQ-AND-USEFUL-LINKS)

Since Serenity is behind, you will need to download the Chinese client:
Torrent (http://btsh1.cdcgames.net/announce/EVE_Setup_China_259009_premium.exe.torrent)
You may also be interested in boatviolence's English Translation (http://failheap-challenge.com/showthread.php?1796-English-translation).

Serenity has two different points of connection, which means you have two chances to not lag horribly. Two shortcuts appear after installing the Chinese client, one for the CNC connection (/server:cnc.eve.gtgame.com.cn) and one for the TEL connection (/server:tel.eve.gtgame.com.cn). According to a Chinese player:

???? ]CNC and [TEL] are major ISP in China, basically, CNC is faster if you are in Europe and [TEL] for America, Australia and most pacific areas.
Picking the right one is important, as I had been using the CNC connection from east coast USA with horrific ping and constant disconnects. Under TEL, I now play Serenity like TQ. If you have problems, try the other option and see if it has better results. When using boatviolence's launcher, modify the .ini to add the above /server switches.

See this thread for a list of Chinese IDs (http://failheap-challenge.com/showthread.php?1821-china-IDs) or this thread (http://failheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1994) for a program that generates them.

NOTE: If you mess up the Chinese ID step and get flagged as a minor, you will only be able to play for 3h at a time before being forced offline for a while. Since trials cannot give away ISK, buy up a bunch of books and items, then have someone hold onto them while you relog into a proper account. Alternatively, get your old and new characters in the same location, jettison, relog, scoop.
Getting Started - Subscribing
Original Thread (http://failheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1893) and major props to y2k for the original guide (http://failheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=1897). I only redid the pictures because I am OCD like that.

Rather than traditional EVE-only GTCs, the basic idea is to buy up codes that give you generic coins in CDC's system and then apply them to EVE. These "coin codes" look like the following:

sn:38862310328xxxxx pw:W7DWHJxxxxx9KGCE

y2k is a boss and you can buy these codes from him here:

They will appear in the e-mail associated with the PayPal account you buy them with. y2k sends these out manually, so be patient and show your thanks!

Redeem your Cerebral Accelerator (http://wiki.eveonline.com/en/wiki/Cerebral_Accelerator) and inject it as soon as possible. It counts as a Slot 4 Booster, so it does not interfere with implants or any other drugs. Note you will lose it if you get podded.
Learning Skills (http://eve.grismar.net/wikka.php?wakka=IdealLearningSchedule) and Remaps, an unfortunate side effect of going back to pre-Incursion.
Train for Drakes (http://failheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?f=25&t=2009) with the majority.
Get in the corporation and kill people.

Other Information - Tutorials with Free Items
The following is a list of tutorials you can click through without undocking to get free stuff. You can access them via F12 > Tutorials. They may not give the best stuff ever but every little bit helps, especially free Survey and Salvaging books.
Advanced Warfare
Racial Weapon: Missiles - x100 Civilian Bloodclaw Light Missile

Market - x1 Trade, x1 Retail
Exploration
Magnetometric Sites - x1 Civilian Analyzer, x1 Civilian Salvager

Other Information - I lost my Cerebral Accelerator
The Cerebral Accelerator is a booster and is lost when you are podded. Fortunately, we have an easy way to get more that sidesteps any language barriers and GM intervention. Simply make a new trial account, redeem the Cerebral Accelerator, then trade it to someone who will trade it back or jettison it in a safe place for later retrieval.
Jabber is Confusing
Jabber/XMPP (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/XMPP) is something of an instant messaging protocol that we are basically using as an internal batphone. Because of its open nature, there are (too) many clients and it may be difficult to figure out which one to get or how to set it up. Below are links and picture guides for various clients; feel free to recommend one not listed.

This is interesting, does that mean you could supply yourself with an endless amount of cerebral accelerators? Or is there a limited ime/xp time period for their use?

Character using it can only be under 35 days old iirc.

You can't use them once the character's 35 days old. But until then, this'd work. Not really bothered, though, 100% training boost + cerebral accelerator + the free +1s and such from the starting missions is more than enough to knock the learning skills out of the way \o/

So the cerebral accel does compound with implants that you install? I did not realize that, need to get me a set of +3's when I get home

stupid question: there shouldn't be any issues with having two chineselauncher.exe folders amirite?

that way i could have two separate launchers shortcuts, with the two server connections, without having to go into the .ini and manually switch it anytime i need to?

oh cause of this: fyi, I did have to switch servers last night after DT... the TEL one decided to be laggy as shit for me and I had to switch to the other one.

Advice, load the game at least once with each server to set up your overview/general preferences, cause when I switched between them it was like connecting from different installs.

Create a symlinked folder, with the name of the "other one". That way, you will be sharing and progressing your settings at the same time, and you will be having the same setup, no matter which server(proxy) you connect to.

Updated the original post with the fact that there is no more free Cruiser, Battlecruiser, or +3 Perception/Memory Implants =( If you subscribed after June 20th and are wondering why you still have nothing, this is why. I am watching their events section to see if anything new comes up, but for now we get no extra goodies for actually subscribing (Cerebral Accelerator and Trial Frigates/Destroyer remain unaffected (http://failheap-challenge.com/viewtopic.php?p=126431#p126431)).

Updated the original post with a new subscriber deal, which gives you 80m ISK when you make the switch. Note also that we got 10,000 Unallocated SP to play with today, resulting from an unintentionally extended downtime that pushed the normal 1h maintenance to 2h (thanks, y2k).

You should probably save it if you still have the 100% skill training speed bonus because if you use it before then you waste 10K sp of your 100% training bonus and you put yourself a little bit closer to the 1.6mil/100% cutoff.
