they promised exosuits and rogue drone PVE as "the first expansion" last year, before the game was even in open beta. Ocean's worth of salt etc etc.

.."following the game's full release", which as far as anyone knows that content will still happen.

Your arguments are bad and you should feel bad.

Developer Q&A - Dust 514 Development
http://www.twitch.tv/ccp/b/394708149

Summary:

In Uprising

New graphics
Cloud cover shadows
Reflections
Vegitations
More terrain shaders
Day/Night battles (not synced)
Weather (fog, storm, ashes, etc)
Amarr and Gallente medium frames, Minmatar light frame

New terrains feature more open areas, less bowls and valleys (thanks, improved distance rendering).

Light, Medium, Heavy dropsuit frames will have a single model each with racial variants *guess*.
Tier and role of the suit will be differentiated by texture scheme for visual cues. (see "paint-bucket" system, Soon™)

"Something will be given away for free", "improvements to voice comms" => UVTs are going away, all voice will be free *guess*.

Map sizes = 5km x 5km.
Larger maps or multi-district battles not on the road map.

Current game balance has been based on design goals, not what happens to be implemented in each build at the time.
Effort to keep Aurum items in line with normal equipment.

Leaderboards and stat tracking is expanding (weapon usage, etc).

Later Development

Paint-bucket system will allow personalization of drop suits and vehicles (single color/two-tone, lighting, tracer/beam colors are possible options).

Racial variants of all vehicles, weapons, dropsuits within the year.
Weapons Lab (field test fittings).
Gladiator Arenas (organized matches, spectator mode, competitive game modes - CTF, etc).
Rogue Drone PVE still a work in progress.
Subscription model with automatic boosters/Aurum deposits.

Midget frames? (The proportions are a bit off.) Also, the way the "rifle" is held makes me think that it'd be some kind of a SMG frame variant.

It's the angle of the shot.

Also, the SMG assault rifle variant:

So that would be lifetime ISK created in Dust, vs current ISK in circulation in Eve? Those figures are not exactly comparable.

I missed the previous sessions due to :work: and :lunch: and :building-wifi-getting-fucked-and-having-to-fix-it: I'm just glad it's working now before the Dust keynote starts.

This was so odd.. my corporate firewall blocked access to this subforum (and this subforum only) exactly for the period during which the Keynote aired.

X-posting from the main FF thread because of that:

High quality version of the symphony will be released/sold by popular request.
I think art of the Amarr medium frame (and light?) dropsuit was shown just before the 2012 Dust trailer rolled.
Talk of Dust merch and models.
"ISK - The Guide Vol 3" will feature Dust content.
CPM introduced on stage.

UVTs are toast.. woot.
New UI is hawt.
Every match will end with stat porn, will be upgraded to hardcore stat porn following player recommendations.
Graphics quality jumped at least half a generation.
Valleys/mountains have been removed to open up maps visually (also probably balancing sniper perches).

Dust has a TV/web ad. A bit too artsy and not enough substance. If the sand had blown away revealing a battlefield and planets it would have conveyed the scale and style more. Just seeing sand-solders running around and a monologue left me scratching my head even as an informed viewer.

Will be dissecting the presentation for screen caps once the VOD is out.

Guess I should x-poast this here as well:

Dust 514 Keynote

Uprising features overview
- Accessibility: skill tree with nodes, star map, post-battle stats, some other stuff
- Skill Specialization: skill tree more specialized, deeper
- Graphics: big update, both better looking and better performance
- Drop suits & vehicles: more racial specialization (drop suits, vehicles per race), different color schemes to differentiate and recognize roles, new vehicles (assault drop ship)
- Weapons & items: racial variants, some new stuff
- Planetary conquest: new, deep, EVE integrated feature
- Corp improvements: didn't catch the details there
- Universal Voice Transmitter: now free

Overview EVE universe & game development based on it
- Good overview about the philosophy of developing different clients as different view ports / access tools that reveal more of a shared, "existing" universe, hard to retell without seeing the whole thing yourself
- hints about a 3rd client in development that might be a bridge between Dust and EVE

Planetary Conquest & star map
- Dust in-game star map shown *jaw dropped, full of awesome*
- Funny intro to a game playing session showing planetary conquest
- Setting up a match through star map, zooming in through region -> constellation -> system -> planet -> region, moving clones there and setting a schedule for the match
- Doing a live play session with some new stuff (assault dropship, new suits, etc) and known but updated stuff (like orbital bombardment now showing player name)

Marketing Session
- Focus on getting to official release
- Using game events like Pax East, mixed with in-game events (like Caldari Prime)
- sponsorship MFC fighter (now injured, so can't perform on fanfest) with Dust sponsorship (big logo on his ass, looked hilarious)
- Dust TV commercial (work in progress shown, based around an "ashes to ashes, dust to dust" theme) for later this year
- The meaning of "514" is still a secret (probably until release date)
- "need to find ways to lure people unfamiliar with EVE down the rabbit hole" / "release them from the prison BF3 / [other FPS] is"
- more to come closer to release

Did I miss anything important?

I did notice a few things in the presentation and other videos so far:

New sights on AR and LR.
Passive modules are shown on vehicles, Eve style.
Dropships not exploding spontaneously or rolling over, take less damage from collisions.

So any really new revelatory content announced? I was REALLY hoping for a PS4 announcement.

DaDutchDude
April 26 2013, 02:24:58 PM
@PS4: They clearly said they are focused on PS3, that it still has plenty of life in it.

I missed the planetary conquest session, will have to look that up. The session of "developing the core" was interesting in the sense that they have quite a long list of things they want to make good first, and then add new stuff later. Sounded reasonable. They have plenty of interesting long term plans, a lot of it involving ewar like webs, neuts, even the ability to disrupt voice comms.

Short / medium term, the following was interesting (from what I can remember):
- Uprising will bring 6 person squads (solo players will get fucked hard, must find corp soon, although they did say they want to tweak the MM a bit to make teams in public matches more equal)
- lots of improvements on aiming system planned (now too twitchy)
- graphic performance better in Uprising, more optimizations planned (also stated the source of lag is not graphics card but the amount of actors / traffic / collision detection, and they are working on that)
- lots of changes to UI planned to show current mechanics better
- "battle room" planned where you can try out suits, weapons, mechanics (orbital bombardment), longer term also tutorializing more
- they will be tweaking rewards for various things, some stuff like repair was overnerfed

Probably forgot a bunch of stuff, but it all sounded good. It sounds like a new release is planned for the summer with again a lot of updates.

Regarding the PS4, their exclusivity agreement for the PS3 might even complicate making an announcement for a different platform with the same company. I have no doubt they are working on it, though, in addition to a PC version and maybe a XBox 720 version (similar architecture, why not, MS permitting).

I think it's a mistake for any game mechanic to have a way of interfering with comms. Paranoia and competitiveness already runs high in Eve - you don't need to legitimize every Alliance requiring third-party voice comms any further.

Microsoft will never allow one of their games to be connected to a Sony product (how FFXI somehow got this privilege is beyond me) fat chance on an XBOX version.

Sony and CCP: Hey Microsoft, check out this profitable game with an established playerbase. Oh look, here's a whole bunch of XBox loyalists who want to play, too, but can't! Oh, they are having to choose between buying a PS4 and a XBox 720 at a time when most games are cross platform? Oh what a shame. Wouldn't it be nice to secure more customers for your product and get a cut of virtual sales? No? That's too bad.

I'm willing to bet that's exactly the route they will take. How many successful game are honestly and truly cross platform today? That is to say your PS3 players are joining the exact same instances as their PC counterparts. Despite it's ensured success, somehow I doubt Dust will be the blockbuster required to change Microsoft's mind. Assuming anyone will not buy an 720 because of Dust is inane, especially in today's age of households having both major consoles.

Having both consoles was a reasonable idea up through the first half of that console generation due to the high number of exclusive titles. In the past 3 years how many best selling exclusives have there been? With the next gen of consoles, how many exclusives have been announced?

Even once exclusive giants like Final Fantasy, Metal Gear Solid, and Bungie's games are going multiplatform.

I think that console makers are realizing that exclusive games are bad for the market, and are instead concentrating on the platform experience.

I would never say that Dust should be the sole reason why someone would choose one console over another, but it might contribute. It did for me (Got me to look at getting a console in the first place - this was before the exclusivity was announced. PS3 won due to Bluray, and the 360 not having any exclusives I was interested in.)

So final keynote, a lot of stuff about Dust:
- Dust 514 will be released on 5.14.2013 (so May 14th) and will have additional things then what has already been announced for Uprising (on May 6th) (I always though 514 stood for 5+1+4 = 10, so on the 10 year anniversary)
- From what I understand, on live date all racial variant of light / medium / heavy suits will be available, as well as assault guns and pistols, with more to follow for other stuff so in the end, there will be racial variants of all the things
- New game mode will be released on live date (domination)
- There will be new maps / variations of maps (wasn't fully clear if on live date or after)
- New vehicles shown (like Medium Attack Vehicle (something between jeep and tank), fighters (like jets) and solo flying vehicles for transport)
- PVE activity with shooting planet side drones planned (co-op)
- locality of players (what system, where in space, what type of planet) will become more important (both graphic and otherwise)
- Space elevator will be the link between planet and space for getting supplies from EVE players market to Dust players, might also allow Dust mercs to go to space and fight in ships
- Ideas about 'ship boarding / invasion' of EVE ships, possible 0g fights
- Ideas about using an EVE ship to transport Dust clones from planet to planet

I probably forgot some stuff, but it sounded pretty cool. It also sounds a lot like EVE, in the sense that it will gain layers of depth, while also risking becoming quite complex / hardcore / newbie unfriendly

514 doesn't stand for 5.14, they're releasing it on 5.14 cause it is called DUST 514.

David Reed (iirc) talked about how while he knew the reason why the name, they wouldn't say anything about it and it would come up again in future storylines.

I'm genuinely looking forward to the new build and the future of Dust.

I've been meaning to investigate this for a friend. Do you need a special model of USB headset to be able to get game and voice audio through the same device? He already has a really nice analogue headset so I pointed him towards a USB audio adapter on Newegg.

If your existing headset has 3.5mm jacks, then you should be able to get Stereo RCA to 3.5mm adaptor for the output and a 3.5mm to USB for the input. That will give you game audio + chat without having to mess around with a separate microphone.

That's absurd. Dust isn't half of what it will grow into, even skill wise. If they are going to make training that costly of an investment they should consider removing the 'one character per account receiving passive SP' limit and let players develop their alts.

Well considering you can earn about 2 mil SP per month, and there is no way that you need to skill up the proficiency skills to V unless you're higher specialised for some reason, I don't think you can criticise is yet based on the max SP value, having not yet seen the skill tree..

One thing that will hopefully cut down on the total SP figure is changing the racial specialisation skills to non-racial spec skills (so from Amarrian Logistics/Gallente Logistics to just Logistics). On the other hand, I may or may not have also suggested just adding the non-racial Spec skill and then a racial spec proficiency skill after that which would increase the total (but cut down cross training races since it would just unlock the suit bonus) >.>

Keep in mind, there are a truly ridiculous number of spec/prof skills for weapons that no one other than die-hard specialists will go after.

Paying to omni-train characters would not be the best, since you can easily circumvent that by just making a new PSN account with a free email address. Between doing that once, or paying repeatedly, it should be obvious what is more convenient for the customer, unless it's part of a larger package or mechanic that adds value to the game.

Keep in mind, there are a truly ridiculous number of spec/prof skills for weapons that no one other than die-hard specialists will go after.

I will just have to wait until next week to take in the new skill tree and see what I think about it.

I don't exactly see what the issue with a long skill tree is? I get it that this is an FPS but they don't want the average player tapping out the skill tree right off the top.

I like it cause it means people will be forced to specialize to a much larger degree. It fits a game like DUST more than eve.
