[MAFIA]Heap Challenge Round 3: OOG

Looks like round two is winding down. I will be your moderator this time around. I'll be incorporating what I liked from Steph's run and Spasm's run, as well as some cool stuff of my own.

Roles:

Sheriff- Village. Investigates one person each day to learn their guilt(Guilty/Innocent). 10% failure rate(I role a d10. A '1' is a failure, everything else is a pass).
Nut- Village. Thinks he's sheriff but receives bad info or failures for investigations.
Doctor- Village. Protects one person each day from mafia attacks. Can protect self, 30% chance of dieing when successfully protecting someone.
Coroner- Village. As long as a coroner is alive, the alignment(Mafia/Village/Neutral) of everyone who dies as they die. Can investigate one dead person to learn their role.
Lawyer- Village. Redirects the lynch once per game from himself to someone else. Appears guilty to the sheriff.
Vigilante- Village. Can kill a player twice per game, appears guilty of the sheriff.
Village Idiot- Neutral. Wins the game(separately from village or mafia) if he's lynched by the village.
Federal Cop- Neutral. Investigates one person each day to learn if they're the turncoat. Wins the game(separately from village or mafia) if he finds the turncoat. If killed, takes everyone involved in his death with him(so all the villagers who voted for him or the mafia who killed him).
Turncoat- Neutral. Starts as a villager, can swap to mafia(but not back) before day three passes. If he hasn't swapped by day three, becomes a standard villager.
Don- Mafia. head of the mafia, decides who dies each night, appears innocent to the sheriff.


Rules:

-Votes should be bold, standard size and text.
-No screenshots. Absolutely none.
-Bold your lynch votes.
-No editing posts. Editing for spelling or format within a few seconds of posting is kinda acceptable, but try not to. To change your lynch vote, post a new post, strike out your previous vote, then bold your new vote.
-At the end of each day(every 24 hours) I will post everyone who died, what their alignment was(as long as a coroner is still alive), and how they were killed.
-The objective is to win, not to survive. Dead players share in their teams victory.
-Lying about your role is seriously encouraged, the hilarity of the results are on you though.
-If the vote for a lynch is tied, no one will be lynched.
-Abstaining is a vote to not lynch anyone. If the majority vote is for abstaining, then there will be no lynch.


First two slots are reserved for the previous moderators, unless they don't want to play.

Don´t you think the federal cop could break the game?

If we play with don only the don would die if the mafia targets him but if we lynch half the players will be gone and depending on mafia participation the game could be over at this point. ^^

Maybe. It's a trial run on a new role, one I expect fhc will make amazingly funny. Maybe he only kills half if lynched by the village.

Anyone with roles sends me a PM with their choices. You can also ask questions by PM should you feel asking it would give you away.

Generally will be opposite. Failure and potentially correct just often enough to make the player believe he IS a sheriff.


Any hints to the theme?

Have been considering a few different ones. Something I do a bit different is I tend to up the story telling. The end of the day won't be "Varcaus the villager was lynched, Steph the neutral was gunned down". I'll likely have a short paragraph of more details into their death. Currently, I'm leading towards a mental hospital setting(players don't die, they are cured and released back into the population), but could be convinced to try something scifi as well. I suspect a Star Trek setting during the Dominion War would be pretty easy to make fit.

Once we do, said confirmed villager should ask everybody in the game to PM them the exact wording of their PM they got from Cue about their role. If Cue cut/paste the PMs, which I suspect he did, the confirmed villager will easily have enough data to separate the normal villagers from the power roles/mafia, and probably enough data on the power roles to differentiate the mafia from the village power roles.

Either way we almost certainly get a huge block of villagers working together. Good idea or no? I don't think there are any holes in it.

Mafia doesn't even need to accuse anyone, all the villagers are witch hunting anyway. Also, they're accusing people based on the dumbest things. If this were a game with people who didn't do retarded things, it would be easy to spot the mafia (they'd be the ones using weird reasoning). The problem is that in all of the games so far (and especially this one), people acting weird are more likely to be retarded villagers than mafia, which leaves a great cover for the mafia.

also, goofy roles are what vary the thing. And some of them (hi fed) are amusing foils to people being fucking retarded all the time (okay, no they're not, but they DO make it amusing when that happens)
If everyone playing played as well as the few people who've handled themselves right, then sure, we'd be better off without adding anything in, but as it is, theres one game being played by the people who know whats going on and another being played by the rest, which is mostly being led around by the nose, hence why some people are getting bored. Give it time to settle down and the stronger players to get more of an even distribution between teams, and we can go over to the basic game again.

Mason Grandmaster: Villager, can induct people to the masons as he chooses. Only the grandmaster can recruit, rule 1 of the masons is dont talk about them in public (naming yourself as one or giving too strong a hint that you are one in public will cause you to die the following night). anyone, including mafia, can become masons, if the grandmaster dies, all current masons get to elect a new grandmaster. All investigations carried out by masons have the results (NOT the person carrying out the investigation's name) handed to the grandmaster at the time they are carried out.

Mason: Inducted by grand master, knows a secret passcode (handshake) that can be used to identify to other masons in private channels, if the grandmaster chooses to keep the identities of masons from each other. Can be a mafia.

Don: As previous games, but shows as guilty when investigated.

Mafioso: As before

Enforcer: Mafia member that carries out the hits.

Crooked cop: As sheriff (with additional rules for this game), all investigation results copied to don. Shares mafia AND village win conditions until investigated, then becomes standard mafia (if it was the sheriff who checked) or ceases to share village win (if the PI checked - retains powers in this case).

Sheriff: can check one person per night, OR post the results of any prior check publicly (does not reveal by doing this, it's through a GM post).

Don's girl: (or guy, but lets assume we're going with 50s style, so has to at least appear to be female for the don not to lose his role...) Knows who the don is, and the PI. Special win condition: Wins ONLY if she and the PI survive, regardless of mafia or village victory.

Village idiot: as past games. best given to someone like lords to teach you fuckers not to kill someone for bad reasons.

PI: Knows who the dons girl is. Can investigate someone every night, CANNOT post this publicly except in the thread like current sheriffs. Special win condition: survive with don's girl alive, and don dead. (note, his win condition is NOT the same as the don's girl) If the don has a certain identity for the PI, the enforcer will be sent after the PI, and both will die. Don's girl then gains mafia win condition.

Doc: As before

No more than 2*doc, 1/4 population mafia, 2*legit and 1*crooked sheriff. For maximum hilarity, have multiple don's girls, all playing with the same PI and don, and PI and Don can only win if ONE girl lives, separate from all other win/loss states.

Well, personally I'm having a blast, but that comes from being successful two games in a row. I understand they've been frustrating for other people (as the first one was for me) and I'm a little worried bent is going to blow a blood vessel.

It might be worth waiting on running another game. Or putting a fucking massive disclaimer that you shouldn't play if you're feeling tired of the game, leave it open for the people who want to invest the time and have the energy.

The WH40K game looks like it could be a ton of fun, but it could also be a massive clusterfuck that creates a heaping pile of horribly frustrating :psyduck:

From following the mafia threads, seems to me for the village to win the sheriff needs to anounce himself from the start (his first and all following investigations made public) with docs protecting the shit out of him secretly. Roles such as village idiot and turncoat make the game too easy for mafia in forum format.

The village idiot actually isn't that big a deal, lynching them is one lost lynch and as we've seen the village can lose lynches all over at the best of times.

If someone steps up day 1 and says they're the idiot I'd be happy to lynch them to stop people hiding behind it in future.

Also it's really totally unnecessary to have a cop. It helps a lot sure, but if people are actually thinking and playing well the mafia can't lead the town and then they get caught. Some town members have actually done a good job of spotting mafia in the past few games, but some haven't and half the village vs the other half + mafia means the mafia win.

I'm pretty sure its not going to turn out how you think. I mean its a village loss sure, but not for the reasons you want.

My biggest screw up at the start was believing echo was a doc. That significantly changed how I was thinking things were going down. I also thought with the number of players we had and the number of roles we had 1 of each role and 2 docs.. Turns out that's not the case either (I thought this was actually in the rules, but I have since checked and it was a stupid assumption I made from how they were written).

It also doesn't help that the 1 or 2 times I have actually thought I had a grasp on what was going on, people haven't done what I asked. Cul was a great example of this. Asked him to hit someone as his second target, he agrees and then he hit someone else. Conclusion, he didn't hit them because he couldn't hit them, therefor he wasn't the vigilante that he was claiming to be.. Pitch forks, fire, the works, another dead villager..

I've since found out why he did this and TBH I don't blame him, but it made him look mafia.

A couple of people still alive are treading this path as well, I've pretty much given up on them.

I stand by nicho's play being smart in light of the info he had at the time, and will continue to do so. Also, bent being terrible was secondary to Me dropping some just-subtle-enough hints at the start and then holding his reveal for lategame, playing the perfect sheriff, while covered most of the game's duration because we had docs who knew what was going on.

I plan on starting MAFIA - Alien Epidemic about a week after 40K starts. Couldn't figure out who it was that put there name on the list for the game after 40K, reading this thread, am thinking it was Nobody Holme. Nobody, let me know if you want to go before me, I think we might have the capacity to run more then one game concurrently, and I think mine might not last as long as 40K, even with starting a week afterwords.

I have a few more tweaks to the Alien Epidemic rules, but should be good for some mind games with the gradual switching of sides from Human to Epidemic.

It'd probably run a bit better after people play the more variant versions before it, to avoid coming into it with preconceptions, and also to weed out a few more dumb ideas from the general FHC subconcious. (also, i need more candidates for the masons, at the moment only three people have shown themselves to have what it takes to lead a villager faction properly.

Generally will be opposite. Failure and potentially correct just often enough to make the player believe he IS a sheriff.
